Very Concise

With almost 700 pages and an ominously black cover, the exterior of this book places it with so many other neuroscience texts: long, dull and confusing. But read on - there may be more to this book than meets the visual cortex... Concise Text of Neuroscience aims to provide the medical student with a relevant knowledge of the main topics in neuroscience. It achieves this in fifteen chapters, each one integrating the necessary neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with a related section on clinical neurology. The neuroanatomy is described with the aid of illustrations which, while only in one colour, are beautifully clear. Clinical sections include case histories which allow the reader to apply the acquired knowledge to a realistic situation. "Further application" questions and excellent summaries add to the quality of this book as a learning resource. Adding further to this are the appendices, covering neuroembryology, neurological examination, neurological imaging, and a simple-but-detailed MRI atlas. To me, however, the most important characteristic of any book attempting to cover such a complex subject is clarity of the writing style. In this area Concise Text excels. It explains difficult concepts in an understandable fashion, and amazingly retains its conciseness - the conciseness that allows the integration of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and clinical neurology into one textbook. As a medical student, you will be required to have a working knowledge of neuroscience. If you're looking for a book that teaches the essentials with good detail, but omits the useless facts, then this could be a useful one to have.

Robert E. Kingsley provided an excellent text that can be used for specific science research and class room teaching. It provides exceptionally good detail with wonderful graphic illustrations about the brain and about the spine. If not used for the current curriculum I recommend that it be required for extra broad research for technical papers. It will serve the practitioner and student in any level. At least get a used copy for reading and ready reference.

Good book but...

This is a good over-view of neuroscience. However the concise part sometimes gets in the way of the neuroscience part. I found it to be at a level of detail that made it unhelpful to me.

As a companion to an intro neuroscience course I think it would be helpful.

A former Amazon executive offers an insider’s perspective on the company’s guiding principles. Amazon has had its share of coverage, including Brad Stone’s�The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon(2013). But this lean book cuts a different way. Rossman, an executive at Amazon who left to become a managing director at a consulting firm, weaves his own war stories around Amazon’s 14 leadership principles. While these principles are no secret, Rossman brings them to life with insightful commentary of his own. Each chapter begins with a salient “Leaders at Amazon…” statement, e.g., “Leaders at Amazon focus on the key outputs for their business and deliver them with the right quality and in a timely fashion. Despite setbacks, they rise to the occasion and never settle.” Rossman then offers observations and anecdotes illuminating the corresponding idea. For example, in Chapter 1, “Obsess Over the Customer,” he discusses Amazon’s three customer desires, which the company considers “its holy trinity”—price, selection and availability. Instead of generalities, however, Rossman shares specific insider details that make each principle more dramatic. About the Author

John Rossman is a former Amazon.com executive and tells this story as only an insider could. He is a sought after Amazon analyst by media ranging from CNBC to the New York Times. He develops and implements innovative business models, technology strategies, and operations improvement for Fortune 500 companies in industry sectors ranging from high tech, to philanthropy to retail. He currently works as a managing director for Alvarez & Marsal, a global, professional services firm that delivers performance improvement, turnaround management, and business advisory services.

Prior to A&M, John served as director of enterprise services at Amazon.com, where he developed the Merchants @ program, a B2B network that enables millions of sellers to offer products through Amazon, which now is over 40 percent of all orders. He also ran the relationships with enterprise clients like Target.com, Toys “R” Us, Sears.ca, Marks and Spencer, and the NBA.

Good if you don't have time for "The Everything Store"

It's a handy, compact package of Bezos-think, but if you already read Brad Stone's "The Everything Store," this is basically just the Cliff's Notes version. If you haven't read that one and don't have time to, this will give you the management takeaways without the biography and corporate history.

Smooth and Interesting Read. Truly enjoyed reading The Amazon Way.

The Amazon Way was a smooth and interesting read, and I could relate to the principles and examples presented throughout the book.

As a retired Marine, I could relate to what The Amazon Way said about having a “Bias for Action” and “Diving Deep” to get at root causes to understand issues and put into place mechanisms to simplify processes and drive results. The value-added benefit of reading The Amazon Way is that it provides insights and practical examples on going “one step further” - designing the data capturing mechanisms and metrics that will demonstrate actuals and identify the weak spots that need to be addressed and improved upon in order to keep an organization moving forward with confidence and productivity.

I would recommend The Amazon Way to military personnel – both active and those who have left the service, as a vehicle by which to understand how the leadership, management, and war fighting skills acquired while serving in the armed forces can be applied to the private sector.

Additionally, I would recommend that The Amazon Way be read as a book study by an organization, military or private sector, in order to get folks into a mindset that will drive innovation, force an “open kimono” approach to addressing issues, and most importantly, driving results in ways not previously thought possible.

The Amazon Way informs how the collective genius of an organization can be tapped into and utilized to achieve results.

Great book. Laminate and take to the field.

A good, solid read based on the Amazon way

Good insights from a former member of Amazon's "inner cirlce" who clearly states the importance of a business needn't solid, well-defined principles that are executed every day to meet the ultimate business goals.

Really a good lay down of how competitive and driven the Amazon culture is and why - for that company - it works very well. Most any leader should identify directly with the majority of Amazon's principles and would be wise to adapt them to his/her own business.

Absolutely recommended.

Who Were the Bigger Criminals?

If you happened to be taking a late evening stroll on the night of March 24, 1972 in Laguna Niguel, California, you might have walked past two of the most brilliant, most fearsome, and most elusive bank burglars in all of U.S. history. On that very evening, Amil Dinsio and his brother James were crouching in the bushes on a hill just above the United California Bank. Later, after the grocery and drug stores closed, after the bank’s cleaning crew left, they would break into the heart of the bank — the vault — on a mission to steal thirty million dollars belonging to President Nixon. Then for the “cherry on top,” they would loot as many of the personal safety deposit boxes that they could in order to take jewelry, rare coins, bonds, and other valuables they could sell.

The Dinsio brothers had been successfully burglarizing hundreds of banks since they were teens. No one had been able to figure out how they got past the security systems and into the vaults. They were masters at their craft and proud of it. Now for the first time, Amil Dinsio tells all.

“When this is all over, I’ll give you a story. I’ll give you a real story,” Dinsio said to the media back in 1972. The story is now here. You won’t be disappointed. All the details are in this riveting and quick-to-read book. He even includes a detailed illustration showing exactly how they bypassed banks’ alarm systems. At the back are the actual photographs of Amil and James, the ladder going up to the alarm bell, the hole they blasted into the vault, the open safety deposit boxes, and Amil Dinsio’s lovely wife and daughters.

The author also provides a fascinating look inside the mindset of bank burglars. Their justification for stealing Tricky Dick’s money—as well as other banks’ money and the belongings of private citizens—is all explained. He also reveals how they hid the stolen money, and how they were able to spend it without getting caught.

But there’s more to the story. Dinsio and his crew are not the only criminals. What the FBI did to track them down is every bit as devious, dishonest, and illegal. Dinsio challenges you to read the story and then decide for yourself who are the bigger criminals.

I highly recommend this book for an engrossing and spellbinding look into a slice of American history.

They got Nixon, right before Watergate.

I received this as a free ebook in return for writing a frank review.

This was an interesting, but not necessarily a good book. More of a how-to-do it, without really explicit details, it had no real sense of adventure, tension or mystery running throughout. But I always like to read about a real life crime, especially when murder is not the only anchor. I had the feeling that the author did not really have much literary help in writing this book, but he still did a decent job recounting how he, his brother and a group of guys from Cleveland burglarized a small, strip mall bank that appeared to be a prime, susceptible target. As I read this, I often thought about just how predisposed other banks, whether they be big or small, are constructed to protect people’s savings. I have not heard of a bank burglary in a real long time, but I often here of robbery-stickups almost on a regular basis. The guys who pull those types of jobs are often desperate, have no substantive plan and are often caught virtually quickly and nearby their target.

The fact that this story centered on the theft of Nixon’s personal funds of 12 million dollars was the cherry on top of this heisting tale. I enjoyed this, but it is a book that will evaporate from my mind rather quickly. I would rate this 3 solid stars.

A wonderful book!

This book was so good, I couldn't put it down. Gerry points out certain people in the Bible who persevered in hard times, and shows us ways we can do the same in our lives today. He also shares stories of people in his congregation today who are living out these principles. He also puts some discussion questions after each chapter, to help you apply it to your own life, along with prayers. Get ready to be challenged and encouraged!

I thought it was a great book!! I enjoy learning the different aspects of what goes into the training to be a part of the Special Operations. I have the utmost respect for our military and especially those who make up the special operations teams. To me this book is also a great motivational tool for young people to apply the "mental toughness" and focus on whatever their goals are, whether it is academics or sports or a career.

This is the single most impactful book I have EVER read. Truthfully.

While I had heard people talk about the book here and there the past few years, I was never motivated to read it. Probably because I was just tired of all the 'trying'.

I'd tried everything I could imagine to attempt to feel better. And I probably spent more than $10,000 and a thousand hours (or more) on counseling, personal development, meditation stuff, medications (the few times I tried them), spiritual exploration... ANYTHING that would help to alleviate, even just a bit, the pain and depression I had experienced for decades.

And NOTHING has helped me as much as the simple message and instruction in this book: knowing that my entire life can change the moment I choose to love myself.

And now, today, I am SO THANKFUL - like, EVERY second of every day - that I did finally read it.

I won't preach or give full list/history of my past... just know that I've lived with severe bipolar, suicidal depression, and off-the-charts ADHD for nearly two decades, none of which I could, or wanted to, take medication for. Much of which, I'm sure, was caused by growing up in about the worst home environment you can imagine; the worst kinds of stuff.

I write all of this simply to say: that if you're low - like SO LOW, like you're in the the VERY, VERY dark, caving-in, hell-ish pit that makes dying appear a real, and perhaps, better, option to living)... I've been there.

And my heart goes out to you. I have so much compassion and appreciation for what you're experiencing. Just hope - not even believe, not know - just have the slightest bit of hope that life can get better. That is ALL you need to begin. And then... read this book and apply its' single lesson:

*** Love yourself, right now, for whatever you're feeling, thinking or experiencing. Just love yourself.

I have been reading, and re-reading it for 10 minutes - EVERY SINGLE DAY - for over 6 months.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, I have been applying - MANY, MANY times - the actual practice, and experience of, loving myself.

It is so powerful, yet simple and loving.

And if you get beyond the words and 'mind-stuff', and just practice loving yourself - for WHO YOU ARE, AND WHAT YOU'RE FEELING/THINKING, IN THAT MOMENT - without judging it, or trying to change it...
Just acknowledging what you're experiencing, and loving yourself anyway...

*** You can change in an instant.

Now, I will add that I found this book at the END of a very long and very dedicated spiritual, mental and emotional journey. I found this book 5 years after really committing to self-awareness and spirituality, and have been practicing daily meditation since 2010. The concepts, and practice/ability, of mindfulness, and being present, are ingrained. So I was definitely 'primed' for the material.

But... had I found this book first, and read a review like this one, and held out just the tiniest bit of hope that what the reviewer wrote might be possible for me, who knows how quickly I might have evolved?

So... if you simply read the book with no judgments, or expectations of yourself... just read it, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, just love yourself - many times daily - for HOWEVER you're feeling in THAT moment, it can change your life. AND THEN... everything else in your life can get easier and more creative/new opportunities.

I'm amazed, humbled, and SO VERY GRATEFUL for the evolution I've been blessed to experience. Really, it's unbelievable to me coming from my mindset and place in life only a few short years ago.

And while my life isn't perfect, I still have challenges with the mood 'stuff', and there are relationships and situations I definitely hope to improve...

I honestly cannot believe how much better life is because of loving myself every day, many times a day. It truly is unbelievable. It's like a love, a sense of peace, and a 'knowing-ness' that everything is 'all right', that I've never known.

And that's my hope for you.

Funny fact: I'm now onto my 6th different color of pen/highlighter for the book! That's a record... never used more than 3 before, usually only one or two. So... my pages really do look like a Christmas tree!

This is the first time I've ever went so deep into one book and continually reading and re-reading it. And I made it my pact that this is the only 'personal development' book I'm going through this year. I have a bookshelf FULL of a lot of (probably) good books. But, if I even read them, I quickly went through them and then was looking for the 'next big thing'.

This time... I'm stopping my mind and it's tricks and desire for 'new' and 'better'. So... I'm going slower, and deeper. Narrowing focus. Deepening understanding. And it's making all the difference.

Hi again. I'm not a huge review writer, let alone updater. But, I SURE appreciate it when I read a review by someone who then comes back months or years later to update it. And an acquaintance said they'd just read "Learning to Love Yourself", and it reminded me to get back here!

I'm still practicing this simply message daily. Many, many times per day. It wraps around all the other 'stuff' I do; and is my constant companion. Not much else I can add to my review... other than that now, nearly three years into the doing/practice, I don't even recognize the person I was. Well I do, yet with kind eyes, gentleness and compassion. SO MUCH pain and fear then... which is why I sought out the book.

* Learning to Love myself has been the single most powerful thing I've done to heal my past, my perceived limitations/beliefs and realize my true, authentic self.
* Even more amazing, is the more I've loved myself, THE MORE I honor, accept and love others.
* I've grown much softer, kinder eyes when looking at others... and it might just be the best feeling I've ever had. Just letting go of the judgments (I was SOOOOOOOO judgmental, critical, etc... all the internalized shame stuff) and accepting everyone as they are.
* Knowing, truly knowing, that we're all equals; that we're all JUST people. That every person is someone's son or daughter; someone's baby boy or baby girl.

That mindset is what this book has led me to. And, I'm forever and humbly grateful. Thank you Dr. Hendricks.

This is one of the loveliest books I have ever read. It is short, because Hendricks is so clear and straightforward about what he has to say. This book stays at the top of my favorite self healing books (this is better than self help IMO) and I've read...plenty of them.

You won't be sorry. If you are - let me know and I'll buy your book and give it to some lucky person at a Starbucks as a gift. This book has made a huge difference for the me and the people I know who read it. It will for you too - even if you think you've got no problems in your life. Then from here read Gay's book 'The Big Leap'. Then get on with having a great life. Nuff said.
