Born during airplane’s infancy, R. Roger Johnson saw the wondrous sight of his first airplane when he was a boy of ten. The wonder blossomed into determination during his first plane ride at age sixteen. When WW II broke out, Johnson not only pulled strings, but a little wool over some eyes, in order to become a WW II pilot.
The war brought him together with Army nurse LaRue Tucker, the love of his life, whom he married December 30, 1944. They spent their honeymoon New Year’s Eve night on the floor of the Biltmore Hotel lobby with hundreds of other service personnel. Then they were forced to split up in order to carry on their war duties on either side of the world, where they both nearly lost their lives.
Roger details his bail out over the Himalayan Mountains that severely injured his crew. As the only able man, Roger endured a 20-hour walk out of the primitive Chinese village to get help, surviving a bandit attack along the way.

Over the Hump: A unique, personal account of WWII

I'll be the first to admit that although I learned a lot of history in school, I'm not what you would normally call a history buff. The exception being when history is brought to life by those who made it. Roger Johnson's book, "Over the Hump," is a first hand look at the China-Burma-India Theater during WWII and is skillfully told through the eyes of the pilot who actually flew the mission. That the photos in the book still existed is amazing. That the story is so interesting, and told with a sense of humor, is fantastic.
For example, Johnson talks about the fact that during flights--at high altitudes--their cigarette lighters wouldn't work because of lack of oxygen. He says, "So I devised a way to make it light. I don't know how dangerous it was, but it always worked. I'd get my lighter up by my face, then I'd inhale pure oxygen from my mask, and blow on the lighter and strike it. The flame would go way high, then it would go back down, but there'd be enough flame to light a cigarette. I probably should have died." (Roger Johnson, "Over the Hump," Page 81.)
You have to admire a man with the courage to fly during the war--not to mention one who lit his Zippo lighter by blowing pure oxygen on it!
For a very human look at WWII in the China-Burma-India Theater, this book is tops. With so few WWII veterans alive and willing to tell of their experiences, it's a wonderful opportunity to read about a segment of history by one who helped make it.

Great World War II Read. A time and place in the war often forgotten.

This is an honest and engaging read. This isn't someone else telling the story, long after Roger is gone. These are his words, and this is his life. I like that there is an authenticity to the book, the man, and the stories that sometimes is lacking in a historian's biography. Rogers's experiences as a pilot flying over the Himalayan mountains during World War II are interesting as well as thrilling at times. What I really appreciate is that Roger's book gives you feel of how average folks felt about the war they were serving in. They were proud to do it, but they worried about the future and life was uncertain for them most of those war years. He mentions his wife quite a bit in the book (She was a nurse in the war) and you get a sense of how lucky he feels that both his wife and he made it through the war. Read this book and go back in time for a few hours. It will be well worth it.

A well written memoir

I have to say, I'm not a fan of memoirs as even interesting events can be hard to read about if the writing isn't good, but this one has a writing style that won't slow down the reader. I'm fascinated by World War two stories and it's nice that we can still get some firsthand reports like this one.
