Roberto Valenzuela is a photographer based in Beverly Hills, CA. He has been honored by Canon USA to be one of the few chosen photographers to be part of their prestigious Canon Explorers of Light program. Roberto believes that it is not talent but deliberate practice that is at the core of skill and achievement. He has traveled to every corner of the world motivating photographers to practice and break down the various elements of photography in order to master them through goal-setting, self-training, and constant dedication. He is the author of the bes-selling books Picture Perfect Practice and Picture Perfect Posing.

Spice it Up.

This book is a must read for any photographers who want to take their skill set to the next level. There is a ton of information regarding circumstantial (ambient) light and how it can be used and manipulated to give your pictures the wow factor. As Valenzuela says, this is how we can separate ourselves from the average, no better than anyone else kind of photographer, and become that photographer that everyone wants to hire; one that can command the price needed to be a successful, full time photographer. He also spends quite a bit of the book talking about "helper" light. He writes in depth about the proper use of reflectors, giving suggestions about types and brands of reflectors that will do a good job. He also gives a lot of good information about the use of flash, explaining the differences between TTL and manual flash, high speed sync and first and second curtain flash. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained by the careful and thorough study of this book. There are many books about lighting out there but this book along with the books written by Neil van Niekerk should be at the top of any serious photographer's reading list. If you're looking to add a little hot sauce to your photography, buy this book.

A delightful experience

Based on my experience with previous Picture Perfect series books, I didn't hesitate to buy this book once it became available, and I have to say I'm very pleased that it exceeded my expectations.
I devoured the book in a couple of days, since it is not only so didactic, but entertaining and so easy to read. It leads you from the basics of light, with some subtle but comprehensive technical explanations, to the advanced concepts of artificial lighting, all with sample pictures, clear explanations and an approach that shows you how you can turn real life situations in great opportunities to take wonderful pictures.
I've read now the book for a couple of times, and it has really changed my appreciation of photography in terms of lighting. It is amazing.
Definitely worth every page.

Opens up a whole new game.

I must admit, I have become a lighting geek after purchasing and reading this book. I am now constantly looking for the elements of natural light that make a portrait sing, and I can no longer go for a run or walk my dog without constantly stopping and evaluating the conditions, and sometimes just using my cell phone to photograph willing strangers in the gorgeous light. Yes, I've become that much of a light geek. Thanks Roberto. I will never look at a shadow line or shade the same ever again.
