As we move into the future, decisions on food purchases will increasingly be influenced not only by price and quality but by social and environmental factors, such as the sustainability of technologies used for food production and processing and their environmental and health impacts. Growing consumer awareness about the impact of processing and production practices on the environment, the high energy consumption of certain processes, health impacts of some of the technologies used in processing, and a heightened social and industrial consciousness to reduce the carbon-footprint are examples of factors influencing food choice. These factors have been made quite evident in the recent “buy-local”, “fair-trade”, and “certified organic” trends. As a result, farmers and food manufacturers will increasingly be interested in identifying and using greener economically viable technologies for food production and processing. Some producers are already responding with the use of organic inputs in processing, use of recyclable and good-for-the-environment packaging, establishing just employer-employee relationships, and reducing animal testing in product development.

AAFC provides information, research and technology, and policies and programs to achieve security of the food system, health of the environment, and innovation for growth. Dr. Boye leads a comprehensive research study in value-added processing of plant-based foods and food allergies.

YVES ARCAND, PHD, is a Research Scientist at the Food R & D Centre of Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) located in St Hyacinthe, Quebec. His areas of expertise include characterization and treatment of agri-food industrial effluents, biometric applications, system engineering, optimization of dehydration processes, and simulation and model building, including the design and building of an in vitro upper gastrointestinal tract model for nutritional studies.

About the Author
Chris McNab has published more than 30 titles on history, military history, weapon systems and survival, including two titles for Osprey - Tools of Violence (2008) and Deadly Force (2009) - and other works such as Twentieth-Century Small Arms (2001), The Encyclopedia of Combat Techniques (2002), Fallschirmj�ger - German Paratroopers of World War II (2000) and Weapons of War: AK47 (2001). Chris was a contributor to Hugh McManner's book Ultimate Special Forces (2003) and has written for the Times on the war in Afghanistan. Chris is also an experienced freelance copy-editor for Osprey, having worked on many of its series and general titles.

Quite interesting and detail

I read Chirs McNab's account of the hijacking and recovery of Lufthansa Flight 181 in 1977. I always thought that subject matter such as this would be a best fit for Osprey Raid series. Anyway, this book is about how an elite team of West Germany's counter-terrorist unit (GSG-9) successfully rescued all the passengers of that hijack jet after the terrorists murdered the primary pilot in cold blood. The book goes into the background of the terrorist movement, political reasoning and with ease that they were able to smuggled their weapons aboard the jetliner. The author also traced the creation of the GSG-9 unit that started off with the Munich Massacre during the 1972 Olympics of Israeli athletics and the inability of West German law enforcement to handled the situation.

The book proves to be well written and researched. The author paints a very clear picture of the situation and his prose is firm and to the point. The reader will get a clear understanding of how the hijacking went down, how the rescue operation took place, the roles played by the major players in what turned out to be a textbook operation on hostage rescue. It also shows how a well trained and determined counter terrorist team can overcome a deadly situation without a loss of life among the innocents. But they still needed the cooperation of the local authorities to pulled it off. Of the four terrorists, three were shot down and fourth is ironically still alive to this day living in Norway. She was sentenced to 20 years but only served one year due to ill-health. Pretty sad considering that the pilot murdered by her cohorts, still lies dead.

I thought this book was highly informative and educational considering its format.

Great study of the LH181 Raid

In 1977 Palestinian terrorists took control of a Lufthansa airliner (at the same time the RAF took a prominent industrialist histage in Germany) and led them on an ordeal which would end at Mogadishu, Somalia. The GSG9 special police group made an end of the terrorists and liberated the remaining hostages with no casualties. This dates back to the last days of airline travel with no x-ray machines or metal detectors and the terrorists took control of plane with two pistols and explosives. GSG9, well-trained and equipped, quickly practiced their assault on an identical plane and were assisted by the terrorists choice of attire (bright red Che Guevera shirts). Well-illustrated with maps, photos and original artwork, the book is also well-written and very enjoyable. Only found one error, page 28: gray box describes "kill all eight hostages" should read "kill all eight terrorists."

It is okay

Received the book yesterday, and thought I would give it a read; there is a fair amount of information on the background of the terrorists, and their organizations, but not that much in the book on GSG-9 and the actual storming of Flight LH 181. The volume seemed a bit more political than tactical. The book was purchased as not much information on GSG-9 exits on this side of the water. There are good photos however.

Her work is beautiful and her teaching generous and clear. And this book she moves back to a more natural

About the Author
Stephen Belcher was born in Cairo, Egypt, and spent much of his childhood in Africa and Europe. He holds a doctorate in Comparative Literature from Brown University and has taught in the history department at Pennsylvania State University. He is the co-editor (with John W. Johnson and Thomas Hale) of Voices from a Vast Continent: Oral Epics from Africa, and the author of Epic Traditions of Africa. He is currently teaching at the University of Kankan in the Republic of Guinea.

Comprehensive treatment - & a great read!

Stephen Belcher has put together a superb collection of myths of origin from all four corners of the African continent, the cradle of humankind. More thorough treatment, even more enjoyable narrative style than that which he displayed in the delightful essays he contributed to the earlier Oral Epics from Africa (African Epics Series) assemblage, this work benefits from Belcher's uniform editorial hand, keen eye, broad vocabulary and sense of humor. Highly recommended to anyone interested in Africa, comparative literature, oral storytelling, roots culture &/or pre-radical philosophy. A great read, a great gift for anyone curious about our earliest guesses at the origin of life.

CREATION AT ITS BEST!

This body of work gives the reader an excellent view of the myths of creation from differents cultures in the African Continent. It contains a variety of stories of the begining of the world and creation of mankind. But it all culminates to a main agreement that it all began in Africa. It also reveals the mutual concept that man and all living things on Earth were created by a supreme deity. A must read book for all.

Good content- writing couldn't keep me interested

I understand that it is supposed to be a collection of stories therefore it's supposed to be told as if you're being spoken to but the writing is over simplified. Hardly any segues or explanation so it jumps around a lot like a 7 year old child conveying a story to you off the top of their head. Most books I read on things of this nature state things more eloquently and are able to paint a clear picture in your head to help draw the reader in. But this felt rather bland and not very spellbinding. Decent information but the presentation was less than.

I had to purchase this for a class and have been pleased by the readings. The author writes casually. The words he writes feel like he is just making conversation with you. Although quite lengthy (over 300 pages), it's practical and easy to read/stay engaged. I think it's a good source for beginning teachers in general, not just ESL ones.

ESSENTIAL book - Buy if you are teaching English (especially if taking a CELTA class)

This is an excellent book - very interesting and readable. I love the author's attitude: "This is..a guide to methodology - to what might work in the classroom...Learning Teaching is a book that can help you learn to teach in more effective ways...However, it is not a book about the right way to teach...we can observe teachers and learners at work and take note of strategies and approaches that seem to be more beneficial than others, not necessarily in order to copy them, but to become more aware of what is possible... Thus, rather than saying 'This is how to do it,' I've tried to say 'Here are some ways that seem to work" (from the Introduction to the Third Edition). This philosophy is carried throughout the book, giving examples and ideas, but always with the attitude that there is no one right way to teach. This book would be valuable whether you are just starting out or have taught for a while. I bought this book in preparation for the Cambridge CELTA class. I didn't have time to read it all before the class, but I referred to it and used it for assignments while taking the class. If at all possible, I would recommend reading it BEFORE you take the class, as CELTA is based heavily on this text. Even if you are not taking CELTA, you will gain an incredible amount of valuable information from this book. Highly recommended!

I was highly recommended this book by Grace Dawson (the online CELTA lady) She said she bought it through her CELTA course and it came in very handy. Although she wished she had bought it at the beginning of her course. I ordered it online and received it a few days after starting a TESOL course.
I was a little disappointed in the DVD. Only because I've actually sat in and observed these kinds of classes already. Otherwise a great book.

Buy a basic soc theory book and apply it to law by yourself instead...

This book does a terrible job at explaining even the most basic theories. It is hugely disorganized and hard to follow. It seems as though Anleu tries too hard to make each theory apply to law and this takes away from the true meanings of each theory, especially when her summaries of the theorists are overly complicated when they don't need to be. Buy a basic soc theory book and apply it to law by yourself instead, or better yet, buy the actual theorists works which are sometimes even easier to understand.

Or I guess I had that one. It is great to be able to see so many shirts that I had or always wanted. I miss my RUN DMC shirt, and now can at least look at a photo of it. The photos are high quality, the selection is varied and impressive, and great stories about how some of the shirts/logos came about, that you don't usually get to hear.

It is well presented with great photos on really nice paper. Almost every page is a photo- so it serves as a great catalogue of "the best of" band shirts. Interesting details on each shirt keep you turning the pages. They really did a lot of research. Good range of tees (not just rock).
