Well, put aside any preconceived biases. This is a tremendous book on effective scheduling software development, and it drinks deeply from the wisdom of all the classics in the field such as Brook's Mythical Man Month -- and is likely well-informed by McConnell's experiences, good and bad, in Redmond.

The nine page section entitled "Classic Mistakes Enumerated" is alone worth the price of admission and should be required reading for all developers, leads, and managers. Here are some types of the 36 classic mistakes that McConnell describes in detail:

People Related Mistakes
- Heroics
- Adding people to a late project
- Politics placed over substance (etc.)
Process Related Mistakes
- Abandonment of planning under pressure
- Planning to catch up later
- "Code-like-hell" programming (etc.)

I read this for the UVa McIntire MS MIS (now MIT) program in 2001. I still use it, and enjoy giving copies to my colleagues. This book will only become irrelevant when we stop making Classic Mistakes.

Personal Transformation with Adventure

This book is truly an anointed adventure to go through. It never stops giving you revelatory information. This author doesn't just say that when you change your thoughts you will transform your thinking, she reveals why and how it happens as you read the book. The knowledge of "aha" moments from the revealed truth, begins to cause a miraculous transformation in your mind. It has an amazing way of tying together discovered science and known biology with what the Word of God says. I never realized how much I didn't understand about my own physiology and the way my thinking causes chemicals to be released. This has made me realize that if I change my stinkin thinkin, I can create a life I never have known possible.
This book has given me a "renewed hope" that I can change my life and I now believe that God does have a plan, only I can find and fulfill. This is a "must read" for everyone. If you are sick, or feel like your life has been a series of going around the same mountain, or if you have spent a life of broken relationships and wondered "why", YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

This is one of the best self-help books out there. I would highly recommend this book to anyone whose life is less than abundant. The author explains scientifically and spiritually how what we think changes our brain for and our life for wholeness and happiness.

Great Electronics Book

This is one of the best electronics books I've read. It thoroughly explains concepts without cramming too many design examples, quizzes, and other side notes into the text. If you have been looking for a book that directly explains basic electronics concepts and gives excellent design examples, and practice problems, this is your book.

P.S. I own The Art of Electronics, the so-called "bible" of electronics, and it is for sure, but this book explains the basic and even intermediate/advanced concepts much better. The Art of Electronics is almost like an encyclopedia of electronics. That is, it's much more a reference book for practicing engineers and researchers in a university or company. In that book, the reader is assumed to have a fairly good working knowledge of electronics.

Pretty helpful book.

I purchased this book to help me understand transistors better. It's a much smaller book than the popular Sedra&Smith book. So it's easy to carry on the subway and read. The circuits in the book have detailed explanations attached to them, there are questions at the end of each chapter, and the answers to chapter problems are in the back of the book. So, it's like a small paperback text book. The later chapters get into using OP amps along with transistors to create various types of power supplies. There is a very small amount of time spent on the physics of transistors devices. I've found this book to be pretty helpful.

About the Author

Damien Violeau graduated from Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, one of the major French engineering colleges, and currently works as 'Expert Researcher' at the National Hydraulics and Environment Laboratory of the R&D branch of EDF (Electricite de France). During 15 years of experience in engineering for waterworks and computational fluid dynamics, he has focused on the Lagrangian modelling of turbulent flows through the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics numerical method, SPH. He has also been acting as an organiser of the SPH international community through the working group SPHERIC (SPH European Research Interest Group).
