Not for beginners

I bought it because my daughter has a heart disease, but then I realize that this book was about another heart disease. I gave a check an it is full of pictures and examples and what I liked the most is that it has some reviews of parents who have children with this problem, it gave strength to me. Then I decided to give it to my daughter's doctor, and she was fascinated. I'm looking for a similar book but about my daughter's illness, it would be perfect.

good intro to spanish literature

I am currently reading this book for a Spanish class, and the novels are very entertaining. I found myself reading ahead just because the story was so compelling. Each is a story about a rite of passage, and the reading level is good for intermediate to advanced students. I have been studying Spanish for almost 8 years and had no difficulty with the language of the book. I highly recommend this for a quick, interesting read, possibly for brushing up on Spanish.

The chain reaction from the diary's discovery explodes around West Germany, England, and South Africa, uncovering secret alliances and double agents. This first novel, which attempts to fill in history's blanks and to tie the past with the present, has action, characters, and violence to spare. But the body count is high, even for this genre, and the novel loses its impact long before the end of the drawn-out plot. An optional purchase for large popular fiction collections.

Long but largely rewarding first thriller in which the apparent suicide of imprisoned Nazi Rudolf Hess sets the KGB, the Stasi, the CIA, Israelis, South Africans, and the Berlin police to chasing each other and some embarrassing papers--which may or may not have been written by Mr. Hess, who may or may not have been Mr. Hess. It's the late 80's, and the cracks in the Eastern bloc are just starting to show. Berlin is still controlled by the WW II Allied powers, who've spent millions to keep Hess locked up in Spandau Prison. It was Hess who made the mysterious flight to England at the beginning of the war, supposedly to seek a separate peace through negotiations with sympathetic aristocrats. Now, the prisoner has hung himself. Or has he? He's certainly dead, but it may have been murder. There has always been doubt about his identity--and the Russians have always been strangely adamant about paroling the old fascist. Then, as Spandau is being razed, Hans Apfel, a young German policeman, finds a hidden sheaf of papers written in Latin by the old prisoner, a document that, if released, will prove immensely embarrassing to a number of people, including the British royal family, a good hunk of the British aristocracy, and far too many German policemen on both sides of the Iron Curtain. A long line forms to try to get the papers back from Apfel, who wants to sell them, and his pretty wife Ilse, who wants to turn them in. Things become terribly violent terribly quickly, and Hans has to accept help from his estranged father, the best cop in Berlin.... The central mystery, why Hess went to England and why so many people don't want the truth to get out, isn't quite interesting enough to last the great length here. In these times of heightened nationalism, this story reads like front page news!

Iles is brilliant again as he takes you back through history and into the dark past of WWII. Winding fiction around a spine of facts, Iles creates a story that is so gripping in its realism, you can't separate history from imagination. In light of the current wave of nationalism, racism, and other underlying troubles in our country, it is a good read to remind you of what it looks like when these behaviors get to be extreme. Heroes, heroines, villans and victims, Greg Iles delivers them all in a rollicking adventure story that will have you thinking. The possibility of it all is what will scare you. Enjoy!

Exhausting

GI is a great writer with one flaw in my opinion : too long winded.
The plot is brilliant but the main characters come and go in terms of relevance. There are too many of them! The Russian angle is irrelevant in the end and the chase around Berlin equally so. But criticism is very easy and overall I have enjoyed the book. Recommended.

Enlightening and empowering messages

If you're a fan of any of the Seth Material, this book will be a wonderful addition. This book speaks from the seat of a pure self empowered, you are a Creator perspective, which to me rings very true. This is truly high quality information channeled by an individual named Roxy. I've read countless material pertaining to enlightening and awakening to our God nature, and this is in line with many of the teachings of the most enlightened masters of our time. Be forewarned, there are a lot of typos but if you get passed all that, the messages are priceless.

About the Author
Jim Thompson is Course Leader for undergraduate and postgraduate Games Design at the University of Central Lancashire, the main provider of design education in the northwest of England. He is also a Director of his own games company.

Barnaby Berbank-Green has been a games designer for nearly 10 years and has worked on games such as "Sims 2 Mobile," "Need for Speed: Most Wanted," "System Rush," and many others.

Nic Cusworth has worked on a number of published projects as a lead designer, including the award-winning "Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus - Lost Episode" for cell phone, and the multimillion-selling "Croc" games for PlayStation.

As well thought out as a AAA game

Recently I started to entertain the idea for a game prototype I had in mind, since I was a bit green on the process I wanted to find a book that will cover the basics and make it all crystal clear for me. Unfortunately most books on the topic were severely out of date, unnecessarily complex or even too expensive to warrant a purchase. That's when I found Game Design: Principles, Practice, and Techniques and being recently published, it was an added bonus. This book not only takes the reader through the entire process of the production cycle, but it keeps everything light and entertaining with just the right balance of type and a wealth of colored illustrated pages, just the way I like it. And with illustrations on practically every page, it wasn't hard for a visual guy like me to read the book from cover to cover. (Why are there no programming books like this is beyond me)

Jim Thompson, Barnaby Berbank-Green, and Nic Cusworth keeps the book extremely consistent between the three of them, so well in fact that you won't realize when another author took over.

The book is broken up into 3 chapters; the first begins with a brief history in video games and takes you through the genres, styles and popular game mechanics used today, which are broken up with practical case studies.
The second chapter then moves unto elaborating on what you previously learnt and applying it to the real world. Everything from creating a game design document to gathering inspiration for concept art, level design and actually taking you through the process of creating a low poly solider from concept to completion. However keep in mind most of the topics are just the fundamentals to get you going, and rarely spans more than two pages since there's so much to cover, but it's all well written and flows like a gentle summer breeze. The third chapter then takes you through the pitching process, prototyping and a discussion on industry standard tools.

All in all it was a great book to read and money well spent, I've learnt quite a bit, and the only topics I wished they covered more was some programming and asset management, but as it stands the book still makes a great reference and resource.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely! Especially if you're a bit fuzzy on the process of taking a game from idea to prototype and beyond. Here's hoping for a 2nd edition expanding into more advanced discussions.

Not Much Information

I had to get this book for a college course, and read it over a weekend. There's not really any insightful information in the book; if you're a gamer in any sense of the word you should be familiar with 80% of the material, and the other 20% can be learned through a small amount of Googling. The book goes over many different aspects of the game design industry, but because of that it never focuses on one specifically and suffers by being too shallow in everything. If you want to get into the industry, the best advice is to pick up a specialized book (if you're an artist, get something on Blender or Photoshop; programmer, pick a language (C/C++, Lua, Python) and find a book for that) and just dive in.

This is a good book to give Grandma if you want her to know kind of what you do for a living or what you're studying, but otherwise it's not very useful for someone interested in getting into game design.

cool history

If you like to read about the history of gaming or trying to understand your kids lingo then this is a great book. but if you have to pick up this book for a class and you been playing games since the 80's then you need to save your money.
