I would recommend this book to anyone whether single or married because its' powerful message and earnest encouragement can benefit each and everyone of us. The subject, 'When Two Pray,' is thoroughly covered, never wavering from Holy Scripture. That meant the most to me. It is both powerful and comforting to read.

The Birth of Bukowski

HAM ON RYE is a slight , entertaining novel that is often funny.It is served up as a slice of autobiography but I'd take that with a huge grain of salt.It's quite hard to believe some of the events depicted.It covers Bukowski's alter ego from childhood through age 21.I'd say the later part of the book dealing with him after he graduates from high school is far and away the most interesting part of the book. Here we see the Bukowski we have come to know , if not love.

One aspect of the novel that is worth attention is the world it depicts.The book is set in Los Angeles between approximately 1923 and 1941.You wouldn't know the film industry or more broadly ,the entertainment industry existed.No one here is an actor , would be actor , singer , dancer or screen writer.For that matter , no one is a cop or detective.The people are lower class whites who are often European immigrants or their children who wound up in Los Angeles instead of Cleveland.There are no New York strivers,Mid west farmers daughters or Okies.You only get one glimpse of the rich , near the end of the book.This isn't the LA of Beverly Hills.It's ham on rye country.In other words , it's Los Angeles as you usually don't see it in fiction or movies , especially those covering the time period of the book.

A little too gloomy for me

This book is an interesting take on an autobiography. Mr Bukowski shares his youth as though it's happening to someone else, specifically Henry Chinaski. The writing is blunt - you won't find any SAT-style words in this book.

The book starts with Henry's first memory at age 3. There are a few key memories in the following years of Henry's life, but the story doesn't really start until the 3rd grade. The Great Depression shaped his childhood into something greatly depressing. I kept hoping something fortuitous would happen to Henry. Because Henry is basically fictitious, I wanted resolution to some if not all his problems. I wanted him to get a girl. I wanted him to get justice from his father. I wanted him to become a great athlete. But most of all I wanted him to be happy and successful.

As Henry grew older and I came to realize no happy ending was in store for him, I became disgusted by his behavior. I did not approve of violence and alcohol as resolution to problems.

5th grade Henry was my favorite. Specifically his interpretation of President Hoover's visit to Los Angeles. The English teacher wanted everyone to attend the president's visit and write an essay on it. I believe that Henry would've gone if he had been allowed. Instead he wrote an essay about an imagined visit and it was so glorious that the teacher read it to the class. His description of the motorcade, the President catering to the crowd, and the band playing patriotic and upbeat music was simply marvelous. Even at this young age, Henry becomes drunk on his own words. His violent streak also started to bud as he observes one kid looking as though Henry punched him in the face.

I found Henry's journey into adulthood fascinating. As disgusted as I was with his behavior, I just kept reading.

Disturbing but recognize quality

I wish the star rating were different, because I did NOT LIKE this book, but I recognize that it was a great book. And it was a terrible book. The only remotely likable character in the book was the nurse who drained the pus from Henry's boils. Each of the others were awful, mean, frighteningly odd, or otherwise the sort of people you'd (or at least I'd) rather not have the occasion to meet.

Henry likes no one, picks fights with nearly everyone, and drinks to oblivion whenever he has the means. His acquaintances sexually satisfy a dog, pee in a family's milk bottle, and beat each other bloody. His parents are neglectful at the best and abusive at the worst. It's a terrible existence, and it appears to be autobiographical.

I appreciated this book because it exposed me to a way of life I know nothing about, but the truth is, I was fairly content in my ignorance. I wish there were no experiences like those described, and lived, by Burkowski.

You certainly get your moneys worth!

Moats has created a set of very interesting characters in the multi-book series entitled the Jim and Penny series. It is almost a must to read them from the beginning and with this bargain you can have the first six novels for a very small amount from Amazon and on your Kindle. It is enjoyable reading and I know you will buy the rest after you are hooked.

I started off with a free copy of the 1st Bob Moats Jim Richards Novels, then purchased the next two, only to return them to buy this box set. Best decision ever! The books are well written, pulling you in from the first chapter. I was delighted to find someone who shared my appreciation of Palm products, and then Yorkies! These books have kept me reading into the nights, at doctor's appointments, anytime I had a minute, I would be reading. I am definitely on my way to pick up some more of the series, and love the fact that there are so many more to read! Seriously, Bob Moats writes awesome thrillers, with characters and plots that are interesting, believable and most of all, make you want to be a part of their "family"!

Great series of books!

I really enjoyed the entire series of 6 books. My mother lives in Clinton Twp, and so I am very familiar with the streets and locations that Bob writes about. His characters are warm, funny, and I feel as though I know them through Bob's writing. The story lines are good, with lots of twists and turns that kept me reading into the very small hours of the night! And he manages to bring the right amount of humor into each story. I have never been to Vegas, but after reading his adventures there, I am ready to head to Vegas and see the sights! Bob has a different style of writing, that makes you feel as if he is talking directly to the reader. Highly recommend his books!

Wonderful visual companion

[[VIDEOID:moWDQZR25WXLHQ]]Here's the movie companion for Tim Burton's charming stop motion film Frankenweenie. It was originally a short film conceived in the early 80s and made in 1984. The 2012 film is a charming remake of that short film.

This is a large coffee table book with a matte cover with movie title in gloss. It's 208 pages.

The book is filled with concept art, storyboards, interviews and photos behind the scenes. Among the development art, there are even sketches by Tim Burton from 1982 of his short film. It's interesting to see the original Sparky the dog in sketch and his final stop motion figure. Included, of course, is the history of the original short film.

The art and photos are printed huge. They look great, especially the photos of the stop motion figures. The character designs are stylish and they really make full use of the medium for caricature to create characters of all shapes and sizes and facial expressions. There are photos of character sculpts and their armature beneath. I love looking at studio photos just to see the working environment, how they create the characters and sets, and the overall organised chaos of a production set.

This is a wonderful visual companion for the film.

A MUST-HAVE for fans of Frankenweenie

I love stop-motion animation, Tim Burton movies, and behind-the-scenes looks at my favorite flicks. Frankenweenie was one of my favorite films of 2012 and one of Burton's best - although it seems to have come and gone without any lasting impression. But this movie has its fans, and those fans will love this book. First off, it is a gorgeous hardcover book with tons of full color photography throughout. There was no skimping on this book. Originally it was supposed to be released in October alongside the movie but that didn't happen.

This is another in Mark Salisbury's line of excellent movie companion books, and it gives an in-depth look at the making of Frankenweenie. There's plenty to see from the early sketches, to how the character puppets developed, and much behind-the-scenes photography. Even though, the movie was in black and white, it's interesting to see how they used shades of color to soften the grays. I was also somewhat surprised by the extensive use of green screen for the backgrounds. It makes sense that they didn't physically build everything which would explain that expansive feeling in the movie (unlike say the more boxed-in feel of Nightmare Before Christmas).

Make sure to take a look behind the dust cover for a fun surprise. And plan on getting this book soon. These companion books don't seem to stick around beyond the first printing.

This Frankenweenie book is a great companion for any Tim Burton or "Art Of" book fans. Mr. Burton's stop motion animated version of his original story gets the special behind the scenes treatment here. You really appreciate the love for details and passion for film making that goes into a film like this. Would also make a great gift for fans of the film making process.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Bootle, a classic tabby cat, wakes up one morning to an empty house and finds that his purr is gone. He spends the rest of the day looking for the elusive noise in a number of interesting, but ultimately unproductive places, such as the toilet, the cupboard, the clock, and the washing machine. His purr at last surfaces with the reappearance of his family. A cat needs his ``. . . openers of cans . . . pourers of cream . . . strokers of fur . . .'' to be really content. Coxon's watercolor illustrations are lavish and detailed, making skillful use of white highlights and small brush strokes. Bootle certainly looks strokable, but the paintings are strongly reminiscent of calendar or greeting-card art, and the artist is much less at home with human faces (the boy looks a bit squashed) than she is with animals and plants (or even the interior of a refrigerator). The text occasionally relies on some too cute wordplay. Boodle's in a Jam!

This delight,warm tale shall please adults and children alike. The lush, intricate illustrations feature the cat seeking his purr in different rooms. One hilarious panel depicts Boodle staring fixedly inside a toilet hoping the purr will pop back up, LOL.
The story itself unfolds neatly, is well paced for all its briefness, and includes a few cozy panels of young owner feeding his pet, holding an adoring Boodles in a headlock while doing homework.
Highly recommend this as gift to anyone who is amused by felines' antics, or for children.

Cute little book

My wife set this tiny little book in front of me a while ago. It's an illustrated children's book about a cat who goes in search of his lost purr, making a total wreck of his house as he does so. Of course, his owner comes up, whereupon he immediately finds his purr. We gloss a bit over what the owner thought of the state of the house. Nice illustrations, particularly when the cat's looking goofy.
