Matthew Helmke has been an Ubuntu user since April 2005 and an Ubuntu Member since August 2006. He served from 2006 to 2011 on the Ubuntu Forum Council, providing leadership and oversight of the Ubuntu Forums, and spent two years on the Ubuntu regional membership approval board for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He has written articles about Ubuntu for magazines and Web sites, is the lead author of Ubuntu Unleashed, and has written several books and articles on other topics.

Elizabeth K. Joseph is a professional Linux Systems Administrator currently working at Hewlett-Packard, with a focus on managing the infrastructure for the OpenStack project. She has been working with Linux and around Linux communities since 2002. Elizabeth began contributing to Ubuntu in 2006 and currently contributes to various teams, including Documentation, News, Quality Assurance, and Classroom. Over the years she has served on the Ubuntu Membership Board and is now serving her third term as a member of the Ubuntu Community Council. High Quality Introduction to Ubuntu

I have been using Ubuntu for some time and was looking to go more in depth with this distrubtion of Linux.

The book is a beginners guide to Linux and Ubuntu. It will be easily accessible to someone who has have never used Linux before. I think somewhere in the title it should have mentioned the book is for novices as I was expecting a more advanced user guide. Despite this, this book still contains a lot of valuable information and I found it to be a nice read.

The first chapter had an excellent introduction to the story of Ubuntu and the goals of the project. Chapter two covered installation as the book comes with a DVD.

Later on common software was introduced. It was helpful to see what the recommended programs to use were but on some of these there was too many basic details. For example, there are two image editors introduced and a lot of screen shots showing the basic functionality of image editors.

Chapter seven got into the command line and the explanations here were very good. The book covers common commands that desktop users will need.

Towards the end of the book Ubuntu Server was introduced. The explanations here were more advanced assuming you have knowledge of system administration. The last part of the book offers ways to get involved in the Ubuntu project along with many links for further information.

I appreciated the authors' enthusiasm for the operating system and their writing style was fluid. It would be nice if every OS had an introduction like this. I think the book title needs to state that it is for beginners, as I was expecting a comprehensive manual about Ubuntu.

This is the best way to get it

Need Ubuntu? This is the best way to get it. It has a DVD with the operating system on it and the book is so well written that an amateur can understand what is going on and what to do. No more guessing which ISO or TAR or whatever is the right file to download. Well worth the small price. I use it in a community college classroom.

Impressive printer tech support & warranty service for my defective book disk!

Disk was defective, didn't realize it until today, the 30 days to return it were up the day before I checked.
Update: the printer contacted me to offer me a replacement disk, and even though it won't help me now, the proactive approach impressed me with their service focus.
Second update: After a bit of conversation over email with the printer, I am so impressed with the customer service and the resolution to fixing my experience with the book that I will go out of my way to buy books by prentice pearson in the future when I need IT publications. No manufacturer or printer is perfect, every one will have an occasional QA mess up slip through, but their willingness to go above and beyond to proactively provide warranty service quickly and in such a friendly way was very impressive. I have received that level of service sometimes but not all the time, and CS and good tech support are my highest priorities. I would give them five stars but lately most of the five star reviews I read are clearly not completely reputable. Four stars, for me, is a six star rating for others.

THE FIRST STAGE: HOW TO LABEL

It's hard to trace the source of the strengths movement.

Some will identify Peter Drucker, citing his seminal 1966 book, The Effective Executive, in which he wrote: "The effective executive builds on strengths -- their own strengths, the strengths of superiors, colleagues, subordinates; and on the strengths of the situation."

Some will cite a 1987 article that launched a new discipline called Appreciative Inquiry, whose basic premise, according to its founder, David Cooperrider, was "to build organizations around what works rather than fix what doesn't."

Some will make reference to Dr. Martin Seligman's 1999 speech after becoming president of the American Psychological Association. "The most important thing we learned was that psychology was half-baked, literally half-baked," he said. "We've baked the part about mental illness, about repair of damage. The other side's unbaked, the side of strength, the side of what we're good at."

More recently, some might even point to the book I wrote with Donald Clifton for the Gallup organization, Now, Discover Your Strengths, which began with this optimistic statement of intent: "We wrote this book to start a revolution, the strengths revolution."

Whatever its true source, the strengths movement is now in full flood. It is a wave of change that, over the last several years, has swept us all forward. No discipline has been left behind. Whether we work in business, government, education, or health care, this wave has lifted us up, spun us around, and revealed to us all a new world. You may not yet recognize the change -- some of us were bowled over by the wave, while others barely noticed it carrying them along. But, with or without our knowledge, it has picked us up and deposited us far from where we were a decade ago. And there's no going back. This wave has forever changed the way we perceive ourselves, our employees, our students, and our children.

Look around you, and you'll see clearly the signs of change.

Many of the world's most successful organizations such as Wells Fargo, Intel, Best Buy, and Accenture have declared their commitment to becoming an explicitly strengths-based organization. All new managers at Toyota must now attend a three-day Great Manager training program that shows them how to spot the strengths of their subordinates. All new managers at Yahoo are required to take an online survey that measures their talents and pinpoints their strongest.

Look beyond business, and you'll see nonprofit organizations such as the U.S. Coast Guard, the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, the American Society on Aging, and the New Zealand Ministry of Youth Development all installing similar strengths-based programs and initiatives.

Universities too have been swept up by the movement. Princeton, with great fanfare, recently set up its own Center for Health and Well-Being, dedicated to the study of all that is right in the world. Over half the faculty are, surprisingly, economists. At Harvard, Professor Tal David Ben-Shahar's class An Introduction to Positive Psychology is now the most popular elective class in the entire curriculum. And Azusa Pacific University now has a Center for Strengths-Based Education, set up by the pioneering educator Edward "Chip" Anderson.

Look further still, and you'll see more signs of the movement's reach. If your child happens to break the law in Ingham County, Michigan, before his day in probate court, he'll be asked to fill out a Strengths Assessment for Juvenile Justice, which will pose strengths-based questions such as "Have you made any good changes in the past? How did you make these changes?" and "What is your first step to get out of this trouble? Who will be the first person to notice this step?"

If you are a psychiatry student learning to work with patients suffering persistent mental disorders, you will be asked to read Charles Rapp's 1997 classic, The Strengths Model, which shows you, case by case, how to "amplify the well part of the patient."

If you are an aspiring soccer coach, Major League Soccer will be happy to sign you up for its Strengths-Based Coaching course. Here you'll learn, among other things, how to hand out "green cards," which draw a child's attention to a particularly good pass or tackle he made, rather than the traditionally punitive yellow and red cards.

Today the strengths movement is everywhere: the corporate world, the worlds of public service, of economics, of education, of faith, of charity -- it has affected them all. It has its detractors, of course, but an appeal as universal as this begs the question "Why?" Why do so many people from so many different worlds see such power in the strengths-based perspective?

Because it works better than any other perspective. The radical idea at the core of the strengths movement is that excellence is not the opposite of failure, and that, as such, you will learn little about excellence from studying failure. This seems like an obvious idea until you realize that, before the strengths movement began, virtually all business and academic inquiry was built on the opposite idea: namely, that a deep understanding of failure leads to an equally deep understanding of excellence. That's why we studied unhappy customers to learn about the happy ones, employees' weaknesses to learn how to make them excel, sickness to learn about health, divorce to learn about marriage, and sadness to learn about joy.

What has become evident in virtually every field of human endeavor is that failure and success are not opposites, they are merely different, and so they must be studied separately. Thus, for example, if you want to learn what you should not do after an environmental disaster, Chernobyl will be instructive. But if you want to learn what you should do, Chernobyl is a waste. Only successful cleanups, such as at the Rocky Flats nuclear facility in Colorado, can tell you what excellence looks like.

Study unproductive teams, and you soon discover that the teammates argue a lot. Study successful teams, and you learn that they argue just as much. To find the secrets to a great team, you have to investigate the successful ones and figure out what is going on in the space between the arguments.

Focus your research on people who contract HIV and die, and you gain some useful insights about how the disease wrecks the body's immune system. But focus your research on those few people with HIV who are relatively unaffected by the disease, and you learn something else entirely: namely, how the body fights back.

Conventional wisdom tells us that we learn from our mistakes. The strengths movement says that all we learn from mistakes are the characteristics of mistakes. If we want to learn about our successes, we must study successes.

Fueled by this idea, the first stage of the strengths movement -- the stage we are in right now -- has been dominated by efforts to label what is right with things. Thus, whereas the World Bank used to rank countries according to their negative qualities, such as poverty, violence, and vulnerability, today it has developed a list of positive labels that capture a country's overall level of well-being, labels such as social capability, economic self-determination, and sustainability of local customs.

In the field of psychology, our descriptors all used to be heavily skewed toward the negatives: neurotic, psychotic, schizophrenic, depressed. Today we have redressed the balance and have added equally detailed labels to describe the positives. For example, Martin Seligman and his colleague Chris Peterson have developed their list of "Character Strengths and Virtues," which includes such qualities as Courage, Justice, Transcendence, and Temperance.

Similarly, Now, Discover Your Strengths introduced Gallup's online personality profile called StrengthsFinder (since renamed the Clifton StrengthsFinder, in Don's memory), which measures you on thirty-four themes of talent, with names like Ideation, Restorative, Significance, and Connectedness.

Our hunger for these labels can be measured in part by the number of people who have taken the Clifton StrengthsFinder profile since 2001. The total is now over two million. More revealing still, each year this number not only increases, but the increase increases. More people took it last year than the year before, and more the year before than the year before that. Clearly, millions of us feel a deep need to label what's right with us.

THE SECOND STAGE: HOW TO TAKE ACTION

If all this labeling is to not go to waste, however, we must now take the necessary next step. We must progress into the second stage of the strengths movement: the action stage. This is where we learn how to go beyond the affirming power of a label. It's the stage where we engage with the real world, where we figure out how to use our strengths to make a tangible contribution, where we deal with people who don't agree on what our strengths are, or who don't care, or who do care but want us to focus them differently than we do. It's the stage where we step up and put our strengths to work.

This book leads us into the second stage, where the real payoff is to be found.

While the labeling stage was driven by the theoretical idea that you learn little about excellence from studying failure, the action stage is founded on a more pragmatic premise: namely, that a person or an organization will excel only by amplifying strengths, never by simply fixing weaknesses.

At the level of the organization, this premise has been both widely disseminated and well executed. Drawing on the economic theories of the eighteenth-century economist David Riccardo, Peter Drucker wrote that the most competitive companies, just like the most competitive countries, "get their strengths together and make their weaknesses irrelevant." How to Succeed

Reading this book should be a priority for any professional who wants to be more successful on the job.

The first part of the book lays out the evidence for why "playing to your strengths" instead of improving your weak points is the way to succeed. I am familiar with the author's other work and that of Martin Seligman which says essentially the same thing. I thought I had removed any lingering notions about prioritizing improving weaknesses over improving strengths. I was wrong. Reading this book and thinking deeply about my beliefs and experiences showed me that the ideal of the "well-rounded" person is deeply ingrained in our collective psyche and a book like this is desparately needed to help both employees and managers understand what really drives success.

The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is because it could have been easily 70 pages shorter. There is an aburd amount of repitition; several stories could be cut out and put on the website instead. There is a story about someone named Heidi threaded throughout the book. I guess it is meant to make us understand the real-world application of the concepts. It didn't work for me. I found the exercises a much better way of making this book applicable. Exceptionally eye-opening are the questions the author asks you regarding the following three myths:

Myth 1: As you grow, your personality changes

Myth 2: You will grow the most in your areas of greatest weakness

Myth 3: A good team member does whatever it takes to help the team

The last myth is especially powerful. By showing you how these myths are false the book prepares your mind to accept and understand the evidence showing that playing to your strengths is crucial to success.

Buckingham presents a very clear and easy-to-understand method for discovering what your strengths actually are. It is not necessarily easy to do but this book does make it easy to understand. Once you have a better idea of your strengths you can start devoting more time to work that is suited to your strengths. Of course, how do you do that when your boss or work environment may not be initially supportive. Fortunately, the book covers this implementation in some detail and is very realistic about it.

If you are familiar with "Now, Discover Your Strengths" it is important to realize that the results from the personality test associated with that book are NOT your strengths, but rather personality traits that are only one component of your strengths. These traits change little if at all over your lifetime, whereas your strengths actually change because they are dependent on your skills and knowledge as well as your personality. Read the book to find out more about how these concepts interrelate and how devoting more time to your strengths AND less time to your weaknesses has been shown to improve your work performance.

The research Buckingham discusses can be applied to one's personal life as well; however, the book does not really touch on that. I am suspecting that this might be the subject of a future book. If so, I eagerly anticipate its release and will buy it as soon as it comes out.

To summarize, Buckingham offers solid evidence showing that shifting your time to tasks that are suited to your strengths is a key component of professional success. In addition, the book provides you with a very realistic way to identify your strengths. To top it off, there is even an extensive description of how to actually get your co-workers and management to support your efforts at focusing on your strengths. This is not pie-in-the-sky theorizing. There are actionable steps here ready to be used by anyone who is looking to achieve outstanding professional performance.

Also, each book has a code that allows you to access the website, so if you are considering buying make sure you buy it new.

Excellent addition to the series

I must say that I have been a big fan of Marcus Buckingham's work starting with First, Break All the Rules. It has been refreshing to read his works due to their research-based nature. I love to read experiential writings, but I also need the "why" behind the "what". This is what the books from Buckingham have provided. This book, Go, Put Your Strengths to Work, continutes the journey of strengths development. You will learn how to develop and put your strengths to work as well as those in your team.

I think step 6, Build Strong Habits, is of the utmost importance. I read a lot of books and can easily forget the valuable lessons I learn if I don't turn them into life habits instead of momentary thoughts. Ultimately, Buckingham gives you five tasks to schedule in your calendar:

-Daily - Quickly look over your strengths and weakness statements

-Weekly - Complete a strong week plan

-Quarterly - Review your strengths-based accomplishments with your manager

-6 Months - Analyze the changes in your strengths

-Yearly - Retake the SET survey

These actions, when scheduled and performed, will help solidify the benefit you get from the strengths model of advancement.

I think there are some better books on improving your efficiency, effectiveness and abilities, but for those who read a few books a year or a decade, I would read the Buckingham series and of course this one is in that group. Placed in with the other books, I give this one five stars. All alone, I feel there will be a lot of gaps for those who haven't read Now, Discover Your Strengths.

Marcus Buckingham discusses six steps to identifying and putting your strengths to work:

1. Convince yourself that exercising your strengths is more fun and productive that spending your time shoring up your weaknesses.

2. Identify specific activities that exercise your strengths. For example, mine include
a. Determine true value
b. Learn and apply new and useful skills, knowledge
c. Creative problem solving

3. Build your job towards your strengths.

4. Stop / reduce time spent shoring up your weaknesses

5. Build a strong team by enabling each member to exercise their strengths towards delivering business value

6. Make a habit of ensuring that each person's activities around you are aligned with their strengths (including yourself :-)

The book could have been much shorter - the concept was repeated multiple times. More specifics on step 3 would also have been more useful.

EXCEPTIONALLY EXCELLENT BOOK TO READ

Joseph E. Harris' best selling book "African-American Reaction to War in Ethiopia 1936-1941" prevail vividly the historical facts and the African-Americans and other Africans reactions. Mr. Harris dedicated his research to bring the strong relationship between Ethiopians and African Americans. You will read more in detail about the aggressive movement of the African-American to defend Ethiopia from Italians' fascism in the following manner: the African-Americans wrote a letter to the city mayor all the way to President Roosevelt. They boycotted the Italian own business and demonstrated on the America streets against Italian. They enlisted to go to Ethiopia to fight the war beside their Ethiopians brother and sisters.

I'm going to take the direct quote from the book to show the deepness of the relationship and its highest pick during mid 1930's as one of the African-American statement.

"...a tendency to avoid the label of Negro in favor of Ethiopian. One black American said, "I do not want to be called Negro, colored, or [n-word]. Either term is an insult to me or you. Our rightful name is Ethiopian." (P. 7)

African Americans was significantly enlisted in different cities in America to go to Ethiopia to fight the Fascist Italians. The American State Department issued a statement based on the legislation:

..."American citizen shall be deemed to have expatriated himself when he had been naturalized in any foreign state in conformity with its laws."

The African Americans viewpoint to the American State Department as Orhardo Andrews, of New York City, stated.

"First the Africans who are residing here and all the West did not come here voluntarily, but by an act of kidnapping which today is punishable in the United States by death...As for loosing our citizenship of this country, we don't give a nick about that. This citizenship is of no value to us.... If you country can not protect us when we are citizens and living here, why should we worry about it?" (P. 41)

He was also the editor and the father of "ETHIOPIAN REVIEW" magazine as far back as in the early 1930. You can request the copy of the magazine form American Congress Library. I found it diligently researched book to learn the oldest relationship between Ethiopian and African-Americans. I recommend for anyone who would like to learn the magnitude support Ethiopia received during 1935 to 1941 mainly from our African American brothers and sisters.

I'm certain the book will also shed some light about European unfounded characterization of Ethiopians to justify and qualify their dark history against humanity.

Strongly Recommended for Every Engineering Student!

Excellent overview of engineering as a profession and the steps that it takes to get there. Reading and exercises encourage personal reflection and preparation for this challenging career. A must-read for every current or potential engineering student. Many of the book's exercises can also be applied to undeclared students and students with other majors.

I bought this book for an introduction to engineering class - I thought this would be a "blow-off" class, but it was not. Independent of the class however, this book is great!
I dropped out of highschool, got my GED, went to community college, dropped out of that, and now 8 years later am going to university; this time, I am committed. Whether you are a drop-out or a high-school graduate, this book will teach you new things. Not only new things, but very important things. If you want to succeed in school, not just barely make it, this book will be incredibly helpful if you take it to heart.

Bottom line: I plan on keeping this book long after the class is done. Good luck and stay motivated!

Decent book

The book is more like a studying partner adviser, giving you tips on how to become a better student in general, with an engineering mentality perspective. Gives pretty good advice too. And maybe i'd have something better to write if i actually read the book like i was supposed to for my engineering course... good luck to those getting the book!

Joseph P. Joyce is a Professor of Economics at Wellesley College and serves as the faculty director of the Madeleine Korbel Institute for Global Affairs. No-Nonsense Guide to the IMF

Joyce presents an overview of the IMF's mission, history, and functions while also providing a critical analysis of the Fund. At the same time, he offers a parallel history of financial crises since WWII that draws on a variety of theoretical perspectives in order to get it right. The biggest asset of the book is the book's accessibility. There is no other book that provides a clear and concise overview of these issues. It is perfect for undergraduate courses in international economics and international economic relations. It is also a perfect introduction for graduate students and policy-makers attempting to get up to speed on how the world economy works (and doesn't) and how global economic governance is supposed to work (and doesn't). The perfect entree for people wanting to engage in one of the most important tasks of our time--preventing and mitigating the next financial crisis.

About the Author

Anthony Williams is a UK-based developer and consultant with many years experience in C++. He has been an active member of the BSI C++ Standards Panel since 2001, and is author or coauthor of many of the C++ Standards Committee papers that led up to the inclusion of the thread library in the new C++ Standard, known as C++11 or C++0x. He has been the maintainer of the Boost Thread library since 2006, and is the developer of the just::thread implementation of the C++11 thread library from Just Software Solutions Ltd. Anthony lives in the far west of Cornwall, England.

Outstanding!

I just finished reading this book--twice! The second half requires careful study to get the most out of it. This is really an OUTSTANDING piece of work. The writing is clear and all the code examples are precisely to the point. Virtually zero fluff in this entire book. You can only imagine how much work he put into designing and debugging the programs so that they are so clean. Well, I didn't notice any bugs in the code, but I didn't try to run them yet and his narrative shows that his attention to detail goes way beyond a quick code review.
Here are the things I liked most about this book: 1) it thoroughly uses C++11 features, including std::move, etc. 2) it's comphrehensive coverage of threading; and 3) it includes code and design discussion for a complete thread pool.
In my opinion there are only a few shortcomings: 1) The discussions of packaged_task, promise, spinlock, and fences/barries wasn't elaborate enough to help me really learn when/where to use these tools. Futures and async were covered thoroughly, but not these other topics. There was comment about spinlock unblocking the current thread that I didn't understand.
2) There are many places where the author/editor could have tied more narrative to the bullets in the code. That's a nifty feature of this book series, and it worked very well in this book, except that in some places it should have been done more. A couple of tricky lines of code had no comment, e.g. how the handle() function works in the message passing example. The chaining syntax is unusual and needs more explanation.
3) spinlock, and a few other topics, are not in the index.
4) It would be very helpful to see a brief example program that would report the relative performance of an analogous data structure class from the lock-based chapter vs. the lock-free chapter. This would give the reader a glimpse as to when the added complexity pays off.
I will keep this book for a long time :-)

This is a useful book for me because this is the first book ...

This is a useful book for me because this is the first book I found on the new C++ Threads that came in the new C++ standard.
This book is a mixture of "tutorial" and "reference" manual as in:
The author sometimes introduces items before they are explained so you may have to skip around a bit to work through the discussions.
This is NOT a book to learn about C++11.
You will have to navigate a fair number of those new C++11 features in this book. This can be distracting but probably should be expected since this is part of the whole C++11 package.

Overall this is a useful reference book. I haven't found another book on the subject to compare it to. For the time being I give it 4 stars.

Best Multithreading Programming Book Using C++11

There are quite a lot of books covering C++ multithreading programming books which ranges from posix thread programming to Win32 programming. However, there are few books that cover the concurrency and thread programming as in C++11 standard. In addition, the author himself is a contributor to this part of C++11 standard.

That said, it doesn't qualify the book as best automatically. The real reason for that I think is the examples are very clearly explained in the book and the framework used in the book seem to be very adaptable to your real-world project easily. In that sense, it is really a practical multithreading programming book.

One caveat though: This book would not teach C++ programming and not even C++11 even if you have some fine grasp of C++. I recommend you get hold of The C++ Programming Language (B. Stroustrup, 4th Edition) or C++ Primer (S. Lippman etc., 5th Edition). The book itself may need some clarification in some place, for example, it should really talk about using -lpthread for linking since it discusses various compilers for C++11 anyway. However, given the aforementioned need of a C++11 text to accompany it, I would still rank this book a 5-star as those minor problems could be figured out easily given books above or you can easily find answers from stackoverflow.com etc.

About the Author
Maureen McGill, MA, BFA, is an Associate Professor of Theatre/Dance at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. She directs the university dance ensemble and teaches courses in dance, movement and choreography. Healing Arts of Mind and Body is a course she has designed which focuses on alternative healing, energy medicine and body modalities. Meditation, Relaxation and Dance workshops are part of her passions, where she also teaches at the Breast Cancer Resource Center in the Tacoma/Seattle region. Maureen's keen interest in the intuitive arts has expanded her curiosity to the spiritual side of life and death. She is a featured reader of tarot and appears at Intuitive Arts Fairs in the Seattle region. As a frequent guest on local and international radio networks, her work has opened doors using symbols and metaphors to help those find light in the midst of loss and grief. Maureen enjoys the beauty of the Pacific Northwest where she lives with her daughter. Nola Davis, CEO, NHA, has spent the last thirty-three years working in the senior healthcare industry. Working with the elderly helped lay the foundation for her desire to understand the spiritual aspects of death. Her work as a healthcare administrator provided the opportunity to understand hospice and involve hospice services within the facilities where she worked. As a CEO of a healthcare corporation, she now aspires to bring integrative services which support the body, mind and soul into the every day realm of healthcare. She has studied Healing Touch with Healing Touch International as well as other facets of the world of complimentary medicine. Nola lives with her husband in the Pacific Northwest.

Real Sharing

The authors have done a wonderful job gathering very intimate stories from real people about real spiritual experiences with past loved ones. I was hesitant to read the book, but am very glad I did. I was moved by the depth of sharing and cried at the loss and love we feel for our family and friends who have gone before us. If you feel you have ever had any kind of 'contact' with a lost loved one whether through a dream or any other means, this book is a place of community for you.

Makes the other side understandable on this side.

I believe there is more to mankind than meets the eye. Through our lives we are told this is crazy or made up. The thing I love the most about this book is that it lets us all know unequivecably that we are not alone in our experiences with the other side. It lets us know that it's ok to talk about, sharing our stories with one another. This is not a fantastical book with unbelievable accounts. They are real people with simple depictions of events.

Some of these stories may make you look at your own experiences and wonder. It will make you think, cry a little and perhaps give you some ease if you are feeling grief over the loss of a loved one. The stories are self contained and often prefaced by poetry. I was able to read bits when I could and it all made sense. Looking forward to more stories and accounts from these two ladies.
