From Publishers Weekly
Ebert combines interviews and printed primary sources in this brilliant reconstruction of the infantryman's experience during the Vietnam War. Though accounting for less than 10% of the American troops in Vietnam, the infantry suffered more than 80% of the losses. Ebert, a secondary school teacher in Wisconsin, tells their story chronologically, from the grunts' induction and training, through their arrival in Vietnam, their first encounters with battle and their final rendezvous with the airplane that would carry them home--the "freedom bird," one of the numerous military terms, abbreviations and Vietnamese words defined in the glossary. The infantrymen confronted environments from rice paddies to jungles, from densely populated cities to virtually empty countrysides. They fought in patrol skirmishes and in division-scale battles. They learned to kill, but few understood a war with no clear objectives. They survived, but most paid a price for their survival. The book belongs in every collection on America's longest and most controversial war.

From Library Journal
Because of the relative lack of large, readily identifiable major battles during the Vietnam War (Hue, Khe Sanh, Hamburger Hill, etc.), military histories of the war can be difficult for the average reader to comprehend. Endless operations and campaigns without the anchor of a turning-point battle easily confuse and disorient. Vietnam literature retains an enthusiastic following, however, because it features a large number of oral histories and personal narratives. The reader follows the individual soldier rather than the large campaigns. Ebert, a high school history teacher, describes the combat experiences of 60 Army and Marine Corps infantrymen from basic training through their year in Vietnam. This is an outstanding example of history through the eyes of the ordinary person. Ebert's book is the finest of its type since Al Santoli's Everything We Had ( LJ 4/15/81). Highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
Vivid, creative use of oral history (here, with the remembrances woven together by incisive commentary) that takes the conventional combat-report format--induction, boot camp, raw recruit, seasoned vet--and breathes new life into the war experience. Ebert (who teaches high-school history and social studies in Wisconsin) interviewed approximately 40 Army grunts and Marines for this report, and also drew on interview-transcripts of South Dakota's Vietnam Veterans Oral History Project. He and his subjects paint the Southeast Asian battleground in its true, unglamorous colors: One soldier likens his first exposure to the country's heat ``to having someone hold a hair-dryer up to his nose''; the author says that Vietnam's pervasive odor was characterized by many as ``seminauseating and often likened to dead fish''). In this Vietnam, grenades are dangerous to friend and foe alike (one soldier describes standing in a chow line as someone accidentally pulls a pin, killing two and wounding 26), and ``humping'' the bush is a miserable, surreal existence, but one that most grunts stick to in order to avoid being branded a quitter--the lowest of the low--even though most days nothing is attained but total exhaustion. Also detailed are offensive operations, corpse mutilation, booby traps, drug use, racial conflict, and varied atrocities. As the soldiers' time in Vietnam gets ``short'' (Army men serve 12 months; Marines, 13) their primary aim becomes survival before their luck runs out. Finally--as detailed in a too brief epilogue--the soldiers fly home, muster out of the service, and then often must withstand criticism for their part in a hated war. Even jaded or knowledgeable Vietnam War-readers will find fresh material here. -- Copyright 1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Best down to earth, reality oriented Vietnam book I've ever
By William Ficks
I've read many books on Vietnam and this is the best yet if you are interested in the real life of the grunts. A very down to earth and human look at the Vietnam experience. From prior to induction to return home. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the real nitty gritty of the average guy in Vietnam. As I said, best I've ever read!!!

Great Reference for Infantryman's Experience
By mockingbird
When I first started researching the Vietman war, I happened to come across this book at the library--exactly what I was looking for since I wanted to understand the individual experience of the infantryman. I had been warned by veterans that a lot of inaccurate books were out there, and since the writer's credentials were simply that he was a high school teacher, I first read it with a somewhat skeptical eye. As I continued to read memoirs and histories and speak with veterans, though, I also kept coming back to this book. Finally I just broke down and bought it. Though I've only spot read various passages throughout the book, it is even-handed, always rings true, is consistent with other information I've gotten, and offers factual information to set things in context (I wish there was a little more of that). Ebert has done a great job getting vets to talk--not always easy--now maybe he should create an updated edition to flesh out the coming home aspects. I hope this author still teaches high school.

This is what the grunts really went through.
By Jimmie A. Kepler
I would give this book more than 5 stars if possible. Wisconsin high school teacher James R. Ebert does a masterful job as he combines interviews and printed primary sources in this remarkable telling of the infantryman's experience during the Vietnam War. Ebert tells the story of the US Army and a few US Marine infantrymen during the Vietnam War. He takes their story from induction into the service through basic and advanced individual training, arrival in Vietnam, their first combat experiences, the first killed in action they experience, in some cases the soldier's death, and the freedom birds that take them back to the world. Ebert points out while infantryman accounted for less than 10% of the American troops in Vietnam, the infantry suffered more than 80% of the losses.

Ebert uses an interesting technique starting every chapter with a letter by Leonard Dutcher to his parents. Dutcher just wanted to do his part for God and country and go home at the end of his tour. In the last chapter, we find out that Dutcher was killed. It caught me off guard and really added to the impact of the book. Ebert takes many of the soldiers and Marines experiences word for word from the individual himself through interviews or letters. It is a collective look at similarities of the many infantry soldiers and Marines in the war. It is a very personal account from many points of view.

This is an important book in Vietnam War literature. This is what the grunts really went through. I was left with somewhat of feeling of guilt from reading the book. Why? I graduated high school in 1971. Some of my high classmates went to Vietnam and fought. My classmate Everett Maxwell was killed in action. I went to college and was ultimately commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry, went through airborne school and served three years active duty. My becoming an officer deferred my entry on active duty from 1971 to 1975. This is the reason for my reflective thoughts.

Read and reviewed by Jimmie A. Kepler.

The Hegemony of Suns is the greatest of the empires of mankind that have spread out through space from an abandoned and dying Earth. The Hegemony's vast warships dominate the skies over a hundred worlds, protecting its subjects and enforcing its will.

The interceptor pilots of the Hegemonic Fleet are the cutting edge of the Hegemony's military might, the tip of the spear. In a split second, they can decide the outcome of a battle that can affect the fates of whole star systems. The life expectancy of an interceptor pilot is measured in minutes. It's debatable if they're still human. It's debatable if they're even alive to begin with.

Alekzandra Neel has attained what she sought; a place among the stars, a chance to be an interceptor pilot of the Hegemonic Fleet. She doesn't expect it to be safe or easy. But as war clouds gather and billions look to the skies with nervous fear, she has no idea what the real cost could be.

Good Old-Fashion Space Opera
By Charles Rutledge
This was a change encounter, a plug on Instapundit, and one turned out to be quite a find. I've long been a fan of space opera, and this is a good one, reminiscence of David Webber's Honor Harrington novels. I quickly got hooked and have been hard pressed to put it down.

Mankind has left Earth to colonize the stars, and the majority of members of the Hegemony of Suns. But not all are, and at the periphery are other, smaller interstellar governments and independent systems. Of course, between the rare systems with habitable planets are lots of empty systems. Which leaves a lot space for pirates and their ilk to hide and harass the commercial shipping lanes.

When one cargo freighter of four ship convoy barely escapes the destruction that was the fate of her sister ships, the assault-ship Conquering Sun is sent to find and deal with the attackers in a barren system simply used a midpoint between FTL jumps between the inhabited worlds of the Hegemony and a resource-rich mining planet.

The author has done a good job with character development, and quickly found myself evolved with them. The science, as with most space operas, is a backdrop to the story, but plausible. Nothing that will make you stand up and say, "that's simply not possible", but also nothing that requires a physics background to fully grasp. (I still don't completely grasp the singularity string that traveled down the length of The Way in Greg Bear's Eon.) The author has done his research and credits his sources. (I haven't been there yet, but I will dropping by.)

Simply put, this is a great SF adventure, one that will keep you "turning the pages", to use pre-Kindle term. And it's only 99 cents!

For me, it just begs the questions, when is the next book coming out and when is the author coming to Libertycon?

Brilliant, Character-Driven Hard Science Fiction
By oh no kimiko
What a satisfying book. Too often, science fiction fans are forced to choose between hard sci fi -- where the technological innovations are clever and all the math works, but the "characters" are so thin they make cardboard look like the Complete Works of Shakespeare -- or character-driven sci fi, where the people are three-dimensional and the dialog snaps, but the "science" makes Star Trek seem like a Ph.D. seminar in physics.

HEGEMONY makes the choice unnecessary in a singularly delightful fashion. The characters act like people, not plot devices, and by the end of the book I felt like I'd made some new friends (and a couple of enemies). Meanwhile, the starship battles might have been written by a time-displaced Patrick O'Brian.

I've been consciously vague about plot details, because a great deal of the fun of HEGEMONY is the surprising way in which the various pieces of the intricate (but propulsive and never dull) plot come together. I will say that Alekzandra Neel, the interceptor pilot mentioned in the official synopsis, is only one of several entertaining protagonists whose stories are expertly weaved together. Stalwart ship captains, sexy pirates, and sinister secret agents also make their appearances. And yet, the book makes a fine, cohesive whole, without undue meanderings or digressions.

OK, enough, lavishing of praise; I'm starting to sound like a paid shill. I really did read the book, I really did love it, and you will too. And, shoot, it's only 99 cents. Buy it!

When do we get a sequel?
By Mark Bartlett
I wasn't expecting a whole lot when I downloaded this book for $.99 after seeing it plugged on Instapundit, but it drew me in from the first page. I don't know that I've ever read a book that did a better job of rendering a plausible and exciting space battle, yet the characters really came alive as well. I've read a lot of full-price science fiction from big name authors that didn't nail that combination anywhere near as well as the author has here.

I particularly liked the clever plot twists and the way the alliances of convenience were presented. Even the disembodied "daemons" were done in a way that makes you speculate on exactly what it is that makes us human.

A masterful novel and I'll look forward to reading more of Mark Kalina's work in the future.

ProBodX: Proper Body Exercise: The Path to True Fitness, by Marv Marinovich, Edythe M. Heus, Ronda Spinak, Alan Duncan Ross

Do you feel that even with exercise and diet you are far from reaching your fitness goals?

You are not alone. Even though we are more into fitness than ever, the programs we use are just not working well enough. Many are even dangerous and can weaken the body and make it prone to injury. Marv Marinovich, former conditioning coach for the Oakland Raiders and renowned sports trainer, and Dr. Edythe Heus, a chiropractor specializing in rehabilitating elite athletes, have developed ProBodX (Proper Body Exercise) to close this fitness gap. ProBodX is the only fitness and conditioning program that safely builds and tones muscle while increasing strength, flexibility, balance, and grace.

ProBodX was originally designed for professional athletes -- such as Jason Sehorn of the New York Giants and Steve Finley of the Arizona Diamondbacks -- looking to increase their level of athleticism and to avoid injury. In this book, the program has been designed for anyone who wants to improve athletic ability or simply get in shape and stay in shape without injury.

Essentially the ProBodX program combines unstable surfaces (gymnastic balls, slant boards, balance disks) with multiplane movement and strength loading (special hand and foot weights) to simultaneously stretch and strengthen the body. The result is a stimulated nervous system and increased speed, power, and flexibility.

Whether your interest is reducing body fat and increasing lean muscle, playing sports, or just maintaining a healthy body, ProBodX's unique balanced fitness program can help. In addition, the program includes a dynamic eating program based on Barry Sears's Zone Diet to truly jump start the body and see real results in four to six weeks.

From Publishers Weekly
For decades, coaches have sent athletes eager to improve their strength and performance straight to the gym to pump some iron. According to authors Marinovich and Heus, such advice couldn't be more wrong. "America's obsession with heavy weight lifting was actually training greatness out of athletes," they explain in this comprehensive guide to their conditioning and Zone-based nutrition plan, ProBodX. Unlike weightlifting, which can slow down athletes by burdening them with excessive muscles, and unlike yoga, which can needlessly over-stretch ligaments, ProBodX is supposed to improve flexibility, strength, endurance and mental stamina without provoking injuries. The key, according to Marinovich and Heus, is to engage the "nervous and musculoskeletical systems as a whole rather than as separate parts." Thus, their ProBodX exercises rely upon wobbly, free-floating equipment-such as gymnastics balls and balance disks-that force the body to use more than a few muscles at a time. Heus and Marinovich have the experience to know what they're talking about: he was once an Oakland Raiders offensive lineman and an NFL conditioning coach; she was a New York chiropractor who specialized in kinesiology. And their current roster of clients includes successful athletes like Chicago Bulls player Tyson Chandler and Olympian high-jumper Amy Acuff, both of whom appear in photographs throughout the book. Their exercises are amply illustrated with step-by-step b&w photographs. Despite the careful instructions, neophytes may still feel like they'd need a trainer to walk them through such exercises as the "Scissors," which involves twisting a knee to the ceiling while balancing a one's stomach on a giant gymnastics ball. But those who have the time and energy to learn a whole new way of exercising should find this volume well worth a try.

just like a car you buy or lets say in fitness
By Rob
Ok, I have read the book a few times. First cover to cover and then again without the Fwd as complained about here, then again with an open mind about the over use of "ProBodX in the text....
They are selling I say again SELLING a book and a system, just like a car you buy or lets say in fitness....SUPPLEMENTS that I am positive many of or all of the 1 star reviews here spend on. Im not here to bash a review or anything but if you want magic potions you should look into the magic pills for instant abs and a feel good pill with your "health care" provider. I don't remember the last time something was just BAM instant. As for the equipment, Planet Fitness 10 bucks a month and its garbage, Golds Gym 25-50 a month, some as high as 100 a month. Lets average about 50 a month that's 500 a year, not to mention the elliptical and Nordic track you have in the basement at 2k each....Just saying most people are well over 200 ish if you out right buy the stuff online.

That being said I made the equipment as listed here and it was outrageously expensive:
what do you need?
some plywood (free - 20 bucks)
4 inch pvc pipe (free- 6 bucks)
anti slip stuff ( be creative - 5 bucks)
duct tape ( prob already have it)
water bottles ( drink water to live..they can be empty)\

I used my dual bevel miter saw (500$) to cut my plywood(free) into 16x16 inch squares then used my clamps(50$) to hold them together. I took my wife's plate from the kitchen(plate set 250$ I used a good one) to draw a circle and used my jigsaw(200$) to cut them to circles. I used scrap 2x2x4 inch scrap to make the unstable surface and rounded it a bit with a belt sander (200$) then took my drill(250$) and some screws and attached the wobble part to the bottom.

WOW Ive already spent nothing on materials but thousands on tools.
If you cant see the sarcasm ill dumb it down. All this stuff can be made for FREE and some hand tools someone you know has. The hand weights can be made and filled with water or sand, the polls use broom sticks, the slant board...don't make me list it like I did the wobble disks.

As for the workout, read into the Marinovich history or Nick Curson and the people they have trained and the success they have had. Read into Sergei Bubka and the plyo/balance work one of the most explosive athletes in history did to hold world records for 20 years. Look at what the top athletes do and you may start to understand the science behind this. Those of you that say they are elite...low impact is VERY good for long term health and fitness.

BE OPEN MINDED AND TRY.

A great method you won't find anywhere else
By Joshua Leeger
I've gone through this program several times and always benefited. Now I'm recovering from ACL surgery and will go through this program again. This type of work and the approach are incredibly important and I haven't seen them replicated anywhere else. Thanks go to Edythe Heuss and Marv Marinovich for producing this method.

A great unorthodox way to achieve sport specific fitness.
By Einstein
I chose this rating as I have a background in fitness science and the exercises in this book are unorthodoxed in movement which I highly believe in for proper body fitness and sport specific exercises. The belief in heavy weight strength training is over rated and makes the pro athlete stronger, but more slower and accessable to injuries in power and force that is generated were with probodx the athlete gets unstable training which provides strength and flexability in all there muscle groups instead of just certain mscles being trained. I highly recommend this book for any person training to one day preparing to become a professional athlete,no matter what you maybe traiing for.

A Detective Story Unraveled
By James E. Royster, Ph.D., Have This Mind: Supreme Happiness...and the Four Great Religions...
Veteran teacher Ray Moore has produced a Study Guide to Arthur Conan Doyle’s second Sherlock Holmes novel, The Sign of Four, which meets the needs of the student. Moore’s careful analysis guides the reader through the development of the detective genre, provides a helpful commentary on the action, and identifyies some of the class prejudices existing in late 19th century England. This helpfully opens the door to possible discussion of comparable biases in contemporary society, this being one of the values inherent in the study of world literature. Moore also draws attention to writing/reasoning faults, to conclusions drawn from insufficient evidence, to improbabilities, to chance occurances, to lucky guesses—all of this to show that Sherlock is not quite the cool, rational machine that Doyle attempts to depict. At the same time, this demonstrates for students the value that lies in critical reading.

Made into the movie Boys Don't Cry. This is the story of Teena Brandon, a woman who passed herself off as a man and had passionate affairs with young women--until she was murdered. Jones' exclusive access to Teena's family, girlfriends, enemies, and convicted killers make this a riveting tale of sexual betrayal and murder.

Poorly written by someone with NO clue about gender issues
By Amazon.com Reviewer
I have to echo previous complaints about the atrocious grammatical and spelling errors throughout this book as well as the overall poor and directionless writing. Most appalling, however, is the complete lack of understanding Jones shows when it comes to transgendered people and the queer community in general.
I was at a gathering of trans activists remembering Brandon a year after his murder at which Jones got up and spoke. Her entire speech was a self-promoting, buy-my-book ploy peppered with "she" and "Teena" references, with no acknowledgement whatsoever that Brandon was transgendered. One prominent trans activist, Leslie Feinberg, left the stage as Jones continued on, returning later to denounce Jones's lack of awareness.
After being present for this, I knew Jones's book was going to be very poorly done, but since it's the only book so far about Brandon, I decided to buy a used copy - so as to not give any of my money to Jones - to learn the facts of the case. To be honest, many of the details are still unclear to me because of the muddled way in which the book was written. If you really just want the details and don't mind wading through the terrible writing to get to it, I suggest you get this book at a used bookstore, through Amazon's auctions or Zshops, or at a library rather than to further line the pockets of someone who just doesn't get it.

**Don't Judge A Book By its cover**
By JGC
I bought this book in a book store and it looked very interesting. The back of the book had a very tantalizing introduction. It gave me the impression that this was a book about someone who gave up their entire identity to become a man; of someone who went into complete seclusion never to look back on their past. The book itself wasn't nearly as interesting as the introduction on the back cover. For many reasons. The author devoted many chapters on people surrounding the crime (their upbringing and other details.) I wish the focus would have been solely on Brandon Tina. Also, in the end I was hoping to hear about what happened to the 2 killers. But it didn't discuss their sentencing. There was also a lot written about transgender activism and hate crimes. That is all well and good but it also took away from the story. I often found the book rather boring mainly because the author really didn't make me feel like she was "in the know." It read more like a newspaper article than a book. "'...everything was too good to be true.' Yes, it certainly was." Very ironic last 2 sentences given the fact that I only bought the book based on its sensational cover and introduction.

Mediocre and Unskilled Writing
By Sally Mander
Aphrodite Jones relates Brandon's story in an extrordinarily trite and amateurish manner. This book sorely needs both copyediting and proofreading. Jones includes too many dull details of peripheral characters and events that do not propel the story forward. Also, there is an appalling number of spelling and grammatical errors. A reader should expect that the purchase price of a book includes the publisher having made the book readable and free of silly errors. The life and untimely death of Brandon Teena are fodder for a fascinating study of human nature. It's unfortunate that Jones did not exhibit any depth or insight whatsoever. This book is a huge disappointment on many levels.

An Artist of the Floating World, by Kazuo Ishiguro

In the face of the misery in his homeland, the artist Masuji Ono was unwilling to devote his art solely to the celebration of physical beauty. Instead, he put his work in the service of the imperialist movement that led Japan into World War II.

Now, as the mature Ono struggles through the aftermath of that war, his memories of his youth and of the “floating world”—the nocturnal world of pleasure, entertainment, and drink—offer him both escape and redemption, even as they punish him for betraying his early promise. Indicted by society for its defeat and reviled for his past aesthetics, he relives the passage through his personal history that makes him both a hero and a coward but, above all, a human being.

Fascinating Japanese Parallel to "The Remains of the Day"
By Michael Wischmeyer
I read "An Artist of the Floating World" twice in one week, once in fascination and once more to explore the nuances and subtleties that characterize Kazuo Ishiguro's novels. This short work, Ishiguro's second novel, was short listed for the prestigious Booker Prize. Both a character study and an intriguing glimpse of pre-war Japan, in many ways it is a Japanese parallel to Ishiguro's highly successful third novel, "The Remains of the Day".
Ishiguro enjoys slowly revealing his characters through their recollection of events long past. The memories are often fragmented, sometimes hazy, someimes simply untrustworthy. In "An Artist of the Floating World" the situation is further complicated by the tendency of its protagonist, Masuji Ono, to misinterpret his own memories.
"An Artist of the Floating World" is a portrait as Masuji Ono saw himself, and as he believed that others saw him. It is three years after Japan's defeat and Ono is preoccupied with the negotiations around his younger daughter's proposed marriage. Last year Noriko's marriage negotiations with another young man were unexpectedly treminated by the groom's family. Almost without self-awareness, Ono begins to question whether his artistic support of the imperialistic movement in the thirties and during the war now places his daughter's prospects in jeopardy.
Although Ono sees himself as a modest man, he overstates the impact that his military and patriotic art had in conditioning the Japanese people for the impending imperialistic war effort. It is never quite clear just how popular and widespread his war posters actually were. In contrast, Ono seems incapable of recognizing the magnitude of his crime against his best student, Kuroda, whom he betrayed to the authorities. He rationalizes that Kuroda's years in prison now give him credibility in the new Japan and that he will fare well in the post-war period. He is even so naive as to believe that Kuroda might be persuaded to overlook the past and thus support, or at least not hinder, his daughter Noriko's ongoing marriage negotiations.
I highly recommend "An Artist of the Floating World" for readers either new to Kazuo Ishiguro or already familiar with his other novels. It is an intricate work of beauty.

The sometimes uncomfortable power of art
By Daniel Friedman
What happens when legitimate art turns into propaganda and can propaganda be considered legitimate art? What happens to the artist who ventures into propaganda when his side loses the political battle? Can he still create art for art's sake?
These are some of the questions explored in An Artist of the Floating World, Kazuo Ishiguro's excellent novel of postwar Japan and the musings/fate of a renowned artist who, having served the imperial cause during the war, is now very much suffering for it.
Ishiguro writes with an excellent blend of economy and descriptive language that wastes no words or passages on tangents or irrelevance. He creates postwar Japan so vividly it is a true "you-are-there" read. Very rarely are authors capable of weaving such realism into a non-contemporary setting. It's also a very fast moving story, in spite of the fact that in terms of action there is very little. You come to know and understand the characters so completely that it simply adds to the effect of the realism.
A classic work by a very talented writer.

A quiet novel about art and war and good intentions
By Zack Davisson
"An Artist of the Floating World" is a beautiful little novel, written in typical Ishiguro style, with the calm surface waters belaying the rapid current that flows beneath. It is an interesting style that attempts to ape classical Japanese literature, infusing it with Ishiguro's innate Brittishness, coming from being born of Japanese parents but raised in Britain.
As with his other novels, and part of his style, a knowledge of historical events is taken for granted on the part of the reader. Allusions are made to once-famous or infamous events and people, and names are dropped with the understanding that everyone is intimately familiar with WWII and the cultures of Japan and England.
The title is a bit misleading, as the "Floating World" is usually associated with the Edo period of Japan, and not with the Fascist era of Showa. Anyone expecting Geishas and Samurai will be disappointed.
A very quick and quiet read, "An Artist of the Floating World" is something than can be read over a weekend with a cup of green tea. It contributes a viewpoint, and a necessary one, to WWII Japan and paints a human face onto a troubled period of history. Love and family and duty are on display here, along with good intentions leading down dark paths, and the righteousness of actions and re-actions.
Like "Remains of the Day," "An Artist of the Floating World" is an intimate, beautiful character sketch. Very much worth the limited time needed to enjoy the book.
