Poetry terms and examples along with excellent websites

Whether a child, young adult or mature adult, if you have or have a desire to write poetry, this dictionary will be a great resource. Listed from A-Z terminologies you will find not just the definition but often a poem or two to describe the style such as Haiku or an abstract poem. Having taken college English courses I must admit I never heard of all that is out there in the world of poetry.

With a click on various links provided Mary Harwell Sayler has given excellent websites that poetry lovers of all ages will enjoy. It also has an appendix that will allow you to find Nobel and Pultizer prize winning poets both alive and dead, and past Laureates of the U.S and U.K.

I encourage poets to connect with Sayler on Facebook if they desire to contribute as a writer as she has an excellent site and has trained/coached many over the years. To her credit she has written many books and poems, judged poetry, and given poetry readings.

This book is a keeper for sure

Mary Harwell Sayler's, Poetry Dictionary for Children and For Fun, is what the title says it is, but it's so much more. Its a book for adults, teachers, and writers, as well as for children. Unique in its category, the book is also a compact course in good writing.

In his book, Writing Well, William Zinzer says that a truly great writer will make any subject exciting. Mary Harwell Sayler writes extremely well, she is a true professional whether she is writing novels, poems, or non-fiction. In Poetry Dictionary for Children and for Fun, she shares her expertise and vast knowledge which has developed in her fertile brain and in her heart over the years of her writing career. The fun part of Poetry Dictionary for Children is in the lyricism of the entries and in the wonderful poems for children that Mary and others have written. I'd like to see them in a book of their own as well as for examples, and perhaps some day they may be, who knows?Poetry Dictionary For Children and For Fun

About the Author
Fran Ross (1935–1985) grew up in Philadelphia. She wrote Oreo while working as a proofreader and journalist, and then moved to Los Angeles to write for Richard Pryor.

Overlooked mulilinguistic odyssey

Oreo is the name of a brilliant black-and-Jewish girl who sets out in search of her father. The story is an absurd picaresque quest, overtly paralelling the journey of the Greek hero Theseus.

Oreo isn't for everyone. You'll enjoy Oreo if you like puns, enjoy linguistics, appreciate mythological allusions, or like thinking about the sociology and history of racism in America.

The writing is full of multilingual puns and linguistic twists. I constantly felt that I might be missing some of the jokes due to ignorance of one or another language. To catch everything, one would need to know English, Black Vernacular English ("Jive"), Yiddish, German, French, Italian, and who knows what else. For example, one character in the book speaks entirely in English words, but used translated French idioms. Another typical example: a shopkeeper tucked his hands next to his "stove-bellied pot." Even Oreo's last name is a pun: Schwartz (German and Yiddish for "black"). Occasionally the writing snaps into the author's voice and becomes explicitly self-conscious.

I enjoyed the variety of mental practices exercised by the characters--"head equations," rationalizations, and observation games to pass the time.

Suggestions for readers: Do keep a Yiddish dictionary nearby (The Joys of Yiddish by Leo Rosten was a good choice for me). Do review the story of the journey of Theseus (see Wikipedia or the author's key at the back of Oreo). Do not read the foreword before you read the book.

The foreword (2000 printing, by Harryette Mullen) seems deliberately designed to suck the life out of the text. It's wordy, more analytical than insightful, and contains spoilers.

I discovered Oreo through a 2011 review on NPR, which proclaimed it ahead of its time and one of the funniest works ever written. I agree that it's funny, but not that funny. I downgraded my rating due to one chapter of explicit pornography which added little to the story.

Great rediscovery

It's great that the book is being reissued. It's as timely now as it was in 1974. The coming of age story of a daughter looking for her father in New York is timeless and written in such humorous way that it's no surprise that the author was writing for Richard Pryor. The novel is also one of the food novels that makes one forget when it was originally written given popularity of the genre today. The author loves the English language and so it's a pleasure to read. It's sad that the author only published this one novel and died in 1985 at age 50.

It's brilliant! So witty, erudite, original...I don't want to keep adding superlatives. Suffice it to say that it's delightful to read and a major addition to the field. Or was, and then was lost, and thankfully has now been reprinted so all of us can experience it.

Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville, where he is a full professor of law. He wrote a series of seven articles about using tort law to force law enforcement officials and medical professionals to report domestic violence to the appropriate authorities and has been recognized as a national expert on this important social issue.

In 2008 he ended twenty-two years of secrecy about his disease at the Brandeis School of Law and twenty-eight years overall when he wrote the article “Walking the Tightrope of Bipolar Disorder: The Secret Life of a Law Professor” that was published in the leading peer-reviewed journal in legal education. The article generated an enormous positive response, as did pieces that appeared in public media in the Louisville area. Since 2008 he has spoken extensively about “Severe Mental Illness, Stigma, and the Value of Treatment” and is widely recognized for his award-winning mental health advocacy efforts. He now serves on the Boards of four local and national groups that focus on mental health and the way society treats those with serious mental illness. He has been happily married to attorney Kathleen Murphy Jones since 1997 and has two wonderful daughters.

'A Hidden Madness' includes a foreword by Elyn R. Saks, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller 'The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness' and winner of a 2009 MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant." Saks, who is a professor at the Gould School of Law at the University of Southern California and suffers from schizophrenia, is the only other law professor in the United States publicly to acknowledge having a severe mental illness.

'One is who one is.'

James T.R. Jones has taken that step that hopefully will provide an example of courage for many. Born into a situation of having a bipolar disorder that was not diagnosed until much later in his life, he endure the isolation of being `different' form his peers, a condition that encouraged him to achieve academically - he not only made it through grade school and highschool but went on to earn an undergraduate degree with highest distinction from the University of Virginia and a law degree with honors from Duke University School of Law, where he served on the Editorial Board of the Duke Law Journal and graduated second in his class. After years of psychotherapy and medication that more or less allowed him to live as `normal' a life as one who is essentially broken, Jones elected to end his secrecy and to come out as a man afflicted with bipolar disorder, a statement made in law journals that he knew just may end his career as a lawyer. In 2008 he ended twenty-two years of secrecy about his disease at the Brandeis School of Law and twenty-eight years overall when he wrote the article "Walking the Tightrope of Bipolar Disorder: The Secret Life of a Law Professor" that was published in the leading peer-reviewed journal in legal education.

All of this is history. What Jones brings to this compelling book is the personal response he felt throughout his years as a secret bipolar personality. The pain, the humiliation, the embarrassment, the constant treat of `losing it' among his acquaintances - all of this he is able to relate with a surprising amount of well-rounded perspective. There are passages in A HIDDEN MADNESS where Jones explains his manic episodes in the classroom as a teacher that would make a fine cinematic comedy! He is just that fine a writer: take moments of behavior controlled by his illness and place them in a setting where they become exceedingly entertaining reading.

But there are equal pages where Jones allows us to feel the angst of being without friends, with aborted attempts to have relationships, with the painful struggles of living a life on the tightrope, wondering when the opposite ends of the pole of his illness would manifest. There is more information in this book about the treatment and the inner workings of Bipolar Disorder than in medical texts delivered in a familiar yet elegant prose style that endears the author to us. For example, `In summary, Dr. Hartman anticipated a number of the issues in my life including my bouts with depression and its impact on my ability to work, my difficulty getting along with people, my dependence on others, my powerlessness to deal realistically with real-world issues, my inability to handle criticism appropriately, my ruminating over problems, and above all my physiological reaction to life's stressors.' That about sums up the life Jones led until his strength of character to `go public' with his malady and in doing so provide a path down which others with Bipolar Disorder could more comfortably walk.

James T.R. Jones is now widely recognized for his award-winning mental health advocacy efforts. He now serves on the Boards of four local and national groups that focus on mental health and the way society treats those with serious mental illness. Well written, this story shows the great determination of a man suffering from the fear of stigma and very real physical and mental issues. In his eye-opening new book, author Fumon Tanaka uses the life and accomplishments of sword master Miyamoto Musashi to look at the history of swords and sword fighting, and to discuss their role in Japanese history and in the development of traditional Japanese martial arts systems.

The book opens with an introduction to Musashi as a real-life figure, not just the legend we've come to know. Musashi was born in 1584, a time of transition in Japan that saw centuries of violence and war give way to an era of peace. In his early years, Musashi studied kenjutsu (the technique of the sword) and trained as a warrior. Before he turned thirty, he had fought and won sixty-six duels, proving himself a truly gifted swordsman. When he was in his thirties, however, warriors were no longer called upon to do battle, and many, like Musashi, turned to the inner secrets and theories of kenjutsu as a way to find a deeper meaning to life. He became a first-class painter and wrote Zen poetry. By 1629, he had gone back to his ronin (masterless warrior) ways, and opened a kenjutsu dojo, where he taught two-sword fighting, the technique he perfected although didn't invent, as is widely believed. In 1643, when he was sixty years old, Musashi wrote his classic work, The Book of Five Rings.

In the second chapter of the book, Tanaka introduces Musashi's major rivals, while the last two chapters go into great detail about the various traditional martial arts systems including the development and characteristics of each, as well as the techniques themselves.

The long history of Japan is also the history of the martial arts, which evolved from swordsmanship. And since the mental, spiritual, and physical aspects are inseparable, an exploration of traditional martial arts is also a look at the very essence of Japanese culture.

About the Author

Fumon Tanaka was born in 1943. He started learning kendo (the modern version of sword fighting) at the age of thirteen, and has been practicing martial arts ever since. He is the leading authority on the traditional martial arts in Japan, and has written many books on the subject, including Samurai Fighting Arts published by Kodansha International in 2003. In 1998 he traveled to France as part of the Nihon Budo delegation selected by the Ministry of Education and the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Since then, he has frequently been invited to teach in Germany, Italy, England, France, Denmark, and Sweden.

About the Author
Gayle Carlton Felton (1942-2014) was a consultant, writer and speaker. She was assistant professor at Duke Divinity School and Meredith College and is a clergy member of the North Carolina Annual Conference. She was a member of the Untied Methodist Scholars of Christian Education and chair of the National Board of Reconciling Ministries Network.

Everett Tilson is Professor Emeritus at Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio. He is author of A Contemporary Approach: Interpreting the Bible in Historical Context, "How United Methodist Study Scripture, Gayle C. Felton, ed. and author of Litanies and Other Prayers Year B.
Deceased June 27, 2006.

Good for Beginners

This text is a good book for the novice United Methodist or new students to religious studies. The book is comprised of thought from four leading writers.

Gonzalez's opening chapter on Bible studying in the Early Church is well prepared and clearly instructive. Witherington offers, his usual, astute and well-researched analysis of the Wesley's and Asbury's (one wonders if his Watson analysis is necessary) use and study of Scripture.

Tilson's chapter 3 keeps this book from gaining the 5th star. His "contemporary approach" is too cerebral. Even as a fellow U Methodist theological thinker, who has a love for theological argument, I found myself wondering away from his run-on sentences and slow train-of-thought.

Felton's concluding chapter brings the reader back on task. She provides a realistic look at contemporary Methodism and its application of Scripture. She also reminds one of Methodism's rich heritage of biblical study and interpretation.

All-in-all I'm grateful for my daughter's gifting me this book. It is a welcomed addition to my Wesleyan library and very recommendable.
