This story confirms that with FAITH in God and hardwork, anything is possible!

I thoroughly enjoyed Fatih's journey. This was a very easy read that covered Faith's life from a small girl with stars in her eyes to a young woman, widow, and mother. I was really surprised at how forthcoming Faith wass in revealing her many sexual dalliances and abortions. She held nothing back, including the several beatdowns she dished out to the women who were having affairs with her husband,Biggie Smalls, including Lil Kim. She was definitley not a shrinking violet when it came time to whip some you know what. But admittedly, she was not able to bring the same bravado to the table when dealing with record executives, included Sean Combs. Eventually Faith is able to stand up for herself. She truly went through a great deal, some at her own hand and other incidents due to the actions of others. I admire how she joined forces with Biggie's mom after his death to settle his estate and through it all she strived to keep her family together. The book had me looking up various songs on Youtube that she had recorded, but that I wasn't familiar with. There was one song made famous by the group Rose Royce--"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" that Faith didn't want to record, but at the urging of Sean Combs, she did record it with Mary J. Blige. Subsequently, Mary asked for her vocals to be removed, because of a disagreemenw with Sean Combs. The verision I listened to on Youtube does not have Mary's voice. Overall, this was an engaging read and a nice musical trip down memory lane.

I Didn't Believe Her Story About Tupac..

The reason I took a star away is because her story about Tupac didn't add up. She claimed that she never pursued Tupac and how he was jumping in her limo and wanting to be seen with her, but I see pictures on the internet of her posing happily with Tupac.
I do believe that she had sex with him like Pac has always said and that Faith is the person that's lying.
I don't believe the full story about Lil Kim either and Mary J(why Mary J was mad at her) I think she knew why. I heard rumors that she slept with Mary's man, KC(Jodeci).
Other than that, it was a good autobiography that kept me interested.

Excellent read

Only a few years younger than faith and biggie I remember all the buzz. I cried when Big died. To read all the details of the life they shared and what faith has overcome has been inspiring and emotional. What a strong woman. As she wrote about BIG's death and funeral, I teared. 20 years, I cant believe it and it feel like yesterday that hip hop died.

Me encanto leer la historia desde la perspectiva de Phil. Esta mujer si la hizo sufrir, pero me gusto que le diste caracter a el cuando debia de hacerlo, su historia mw encanto un amor sufrido pero que de otra forma no hubiesemos vivido con la intensidad con que lo hicimos

Ahora apurate con cantame mujer!!!

PD: el toque de las tres escritoras en el bar me mato jajajajajaja

Cuando le� la primera parte de esta bilog�a, Dib�jame, qued� a la espera de m�s, mucho m�s... fu� de quienes le ped�a a Grace, pronto un desenlace a la historia de Phil y Gerald...y debo decir que no me defraud�, la espera vali� cada segundo.
Phil es el hombre con el cu�l muchas de nosotras fantaseamos encontrar alg�n d�a y nos haga inmensamente felices,un hombre amoroso, dedicado, el amante perfecto y un padre excepcional. Gerald que a pesar de todos sus problemas, es una mujer fuerte, que se levanta de cada una de las ca�das que la vida le opone en el camino,una mujer de hierro con un coraz�n quebrado que s�lo desea en lo m�s profundo de s� encontrar el amor. Juntos son la pareja perfecta, tienen exactamente lo que necesita el otro para ser felices y a pesar de los obst�culos que encontrar�n en el camino, sabr�n seguir adelante con el gran amor que se tienen el uno al otro.
P�ntame, es el desenlace perfecto para esta maravillosa historia, llena de altos y bajos, "una monta�a rusa de emociones" por llamarlo de alguna manera, lo mejor ha sido que este libro es bajo el punto el vista de Phil y le da ese toqu� perfecto que te lleva a so�ar y ponerte bajo la piel de cada uno de los personajes, sentir y vivir cada letra, palabra, cada frase que Grace plasma en ella.
Adem�s se nos presentan nuevos e interesante personajes, nuevas historias, que podr�an, quiz�s, en un futuro convertirse en nuevos libros, cada uno de ellos descritos a la perfecci�n y ninguno sobra, todos tienen su raz�n de ser y estar, que es algo que se valora much�simo en una historia tan bella y maravillosa como esta.
Esperar� C�ntame con las mismas ansias, o quiz�s m�s, con que esper� P�ntame, Jared y Lucy tendr�n mucho que contarnos.
S�lo me queda agradecer una vez m�s a Grace, por hacerme viajar a un nuevo pa�s, por conocer nuevas culturas, creencias y paisajes a trav�s de sus letras, por llevarme so�ar e imaginar cada uno de esos hermosos parajes en su historia. GRANDE GRACE!

Romance y ficci�n er�tica llevados a otro nivel.

�Cu�l ha sido mi reacci�n al leer P�ntame, libro 2 de la serie Santuario de Colores de la admirada Grace Lloper? Hablar� estrictamente como fan�tica de mi divino Phil Logiudice y como clon de Geraldine... (No s� cu�nto tiempo me espiaste para crearla, Grace jajajajaja). Mi experiencia fue como un una explosi�n de emociones m�ltiples. Algunas veces suspir�, otras re�, otras casi lloro, y digo casi pero me falt� un microsegundo para que cayeran las l�grimas, y otras m�s, quise ahorcar a la bella autora jajajaja. Me trajo por una subida y bajada emocional de todos los matices, y no pude entender mejor porqu� se llama Santuario de Colores la serie. Es una novela realista y una grandiosa ficci�n er�tica y rom�ntica. �Conceptos contradictorios? En efecto, pero es exactamente lo que sent� al leerla. Los personajes son sencillamente magn�ficos en sus personalidades y la trama es siempre coherente. La autora nos atrapa en un universo lleno de altibajos donde tanto Phil como Geral son siempre las figuras principales. No te cansas de ellos, de sus conflictos, de su candente sexualidad, de su humanidad tan imperfecta. Siento que su experiencia ha sido m�s que justa y puedo decir con el coraz�n que me hace muy feliz que existan en el universo literario. Miles de estrellas a la autora por una secuela tan emotiva. Mucho sexo sin amor puede anular una novela... en este caso tiene una proporci�n perfecta de todo. Sin adulaci�n, P�ntame es una experiencia �nica. What it says on the tin

This is a fun little book. It's pretty standard Mad Libs, but Steven Universe themed. Perfect for younger fans or for older fans who want to get a kick out of making Pearl swear.

Mad Libs silliness as usual, but occasionally contradicts source material in weird ways.

I wasn't planning to review the tie-in activity books for this series unless they had actual content, but I figure what the hey; I've perused it and it's a book, so I might as well. First, I was a huge Mad Libs fan when I was a kid, though like many people I probably used a few too many potty words to make it funny. Even then, the stories usually weren't that funny, but occasionally an exceptionally absurd sentence would hit your funny bone and you'd go rolling. I kinda noticed in this show-specific Mad Libs book that no matter what you'd put in the blanks, it probably wouldn't be funny beyond just slightly absurd--it feels a little phoned in, as an excuse to sell something with popular characters on the front.

You can't really expect any "canon" content in a book like this, but it's fun to look for it if you're going to bother buying it. I was unsure whether the out-of-character stuff written to complete for the absurd stories was written that way because the whole thing is going to be silly on purpose so why try, or whether it had scenarios that couldn't/wouldn't happen with these characters because the creator of the book didn't actually know the source material. I think that would have irritated me a lot as a kid if I bought this for a way to interact with beloved stories and the situations were so off.

It has a "first day of Gem training" exercise scenario wherein Pearl tells him he'll be "the best Gem in the universe" if he can harness his Gemstone power, and Greg sings a weird song about troubles he doesn't have such as an unforgiving boss and a broken down truck. One of the prompts defines a Warp Whistle as something the Gems need to use the Warp Pad, which isn't true at all. A "history" Mad Lib suggests the whole Crystal Gems group is from the Gem Homeworld, which isn't true in Amethyst's case. A "let's switch weapons" scenario doesn't make a lot of sense because it ends with Garnet threatening to confiscate Amethyst and Pearl's weapons if they won't get along, and people who watch the show know why that doesn't make any sense. A page from Amethyst's diary says they fought a creature from [insert silly word] planet and a newspaper excerpt says Steven summoned a creature from another planet, while in the show they don't exactly fight random interplanetary creatures. One hide-and-seek-themed page has Amethyst in danger of being found because they cook her favorite food and that would inevitably make her Gem glow and give her away, which is definitely not something that happens in association with Amethyst ever eating or enjoying food. A book containing a Gem-related prophecy is found in Greg's shed at one point, while there's nothing in the show about written prophecies. And a weird factoid says Garnet learned to surf on another planet where surfing competitions pick the next president, which . . . well, for SU canon reasons, cannot have happened. This is all very silly to pick on, but again, it would have bothered me as a child and made me feel like adults who are writing materials about the show don't know it as well as I do.

My favorite Mad Libs were the ones where you get an invitation to Steven's birthday party, and then you get a follow-up discussing all the things that went wrong. And the one about Gem Fusion seemed to know what was going on, but I didn't think it would be very funny filled out.

I don't suppose we can take it as canon because this is a silly tie-in book, but one page says Garnet loves to surf. Well, that makes sense, since we did already know she was a Really. Good. Swimmer.

About the Author
Andrew S. Grove emigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1956. He participated in the founding of Intel, and became its president in 1979 and chief executive officer in 1987. He was chosen as Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1997. In 1998, he stepped down as CEO of Intel, and retired as chairman of the board in 2004. Grove taught at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business for twenty-four years. He died in 2016.

Solid management advice

I got this book because it was recommended by Ben Horowitz in The Hard Thing About Hard Things, another solid management book.

This book (High Output Management) dates from 1983 and it shows in the tone and subject matter. The book predates widespread email and talks a lot about manufacturing. However, these are not shortcomings. In fact, it is great that the author is not distracted by things like agile, lean, kanban, etc modern marvels. He makes an analogy between a fast food restaurant and other processes, including knowledge work and HR, and the analogy holds up. Of course, he also gives examples from his work at Intel.

Key highlights:

- what are high leverage activities and how to focus on them
- how many direct reports are optimal
- different types of meetings and how to run them, including 1:1s
- task relevant maturity (TRM) of employees and how to manage them accordingly
- how to give performance feedback
- compensation and promotions
- why and how you should invest in training programs
- how to try to keep an employee who is quitting

Everything is meat and potatoes of people and process management, and to the point. As I was reading this book, much of it resonated with my own experience, and at other times I was amazed at insights that showed me how Andy Grove truly was a top manager, after starting as a researcher and engineer.

I wish I had a mentor or manager as wise as Andy Grove.

A very worthwhile read, honest and practical.

This is not a review, rather some thoughts that occurred to me while reading the book. As manager of a small team I found the book to be full of very practical advice. In particular, the Part 4 - The Players contains very useful processes which are immediately applicable to my daily activities as a manager. Grove's main accomplishment in this book, is the simplification of very complex organizational concepts and processes into simple steps that anyone can follow and manage. Grove is clearly a decisive individual, this also emerges clearly from the text. He lays out a dilemma, lists the pros and cons and then makes a decision, for better or worse. The book is also a very frank account of the ups and downs of management, the author shares his mistakes and moments when his judgement was not accurate. You get the feeling, that he wrote the book, had it proof read and published, and was not at all concerned with the politics or how he would be perceived. Grove's dedication to Intel and its employees is also abundantly clear, it must have been a real privilege to work with a manager to that caliber.

High Output Management provides a comprehensive overview of a managers role and purpose. The book focuses around a central thesis that a manager's objective is to increase the output of the work of those below and around him. A manager should therefore choose high-leverage activities that have a multiplicative impact on the overall output of his subordinates and peers. For example, providing clear direction to a team may only require a small amount of the manager's time, but yields tremendous value in terms of the output of the team.

This book is great for both new and experienced managers since it provides valuable frameworks and strategies for all kinds of common managerial tasks. Below are the core topics covered in this book:

* Delegation - In order to maximize leverage, a manager needs an optimal number of subordinates to whom he can delegate to. Successful delegation provides lots of leverage, whereas poor delegation ends up netting no leverage since it turns into errors and micro-management.
* Meetings - Meetings are extraordinarily expensive to a company. There are three types of recurring meetings: one-on-one's, staff meetings, and operational reviews. Each of these meetings should have a clear framework for maximizing value and minimizing time-waste. There are also one-off meetings centered around making a particular decision - such meetings should be especially carefully planned and executed since they are often scheduled ad-hoc without a clear purpose and with too many participants.
* Making decisions - When making decisions, there's a fragile power dynamic that needs to be carefully handled. Managers should facilitate free and open discussion amongst all parties until a consensus emerges. In cases where a consensus does not emerge naturally, the manager should push for a decision.
* Dual reporting - Dual reporting is inevitable in most large organizations. Consider advertising: should each division of a company decide and pursue its own advertising campaign, or should all of it be handled through a single corporate entity? The optimum solution calls for the use of dual reporting where each division controls most of their own advertising messages but a coordinating body of peers consisting of the various divisional marketing managers chooses the advertising agency and creative direction.
* Motivating employees - Our society respects someone's throwing himself into sports, but anybody who works very long hours is regarded as sick or a workaholic. Imagine how productive our country would become if managers could endow all work with the characteristics of competitive sports? Eliciting peak performance means going up against something or somebody, and turning the workplace into a playing field where subordinates become athletes dedicated to performing at the limit of their capabilities.
* Performance reviews - Performance reviews are easily mistaken as simply a way to assess performance and evaluate compensation. The fundamental goal of a performance review is to improve the subordinates performance. A review will influence a subordinate's performance for a long time, which makes the activity one of the manager's highest-leverage activities. Thus great care needs to be taken in the preparation and delivery of a performance review.

She Had A Reason For Wanting To Cut Up Men!

Valerie Solanas was a radical feminist and a Lesbian. She had very specific ideas about society, culture, the gender programming between the sexes and Andy Warhol. She shot Andy after she wrote the Manifesto. But in many ways he was a contributor to her philosophy and that of the Society For Cutting Up Men. (S.C.U.M.)
Valerie shot Andy Warhol in 1968. She died 20 years later of emphysema and pneumonia in the Bristol Hotel in San Francisco California. She was 52 years old.

Troubled as she was she possessed a keen insight into the human condition. Especially responsible for this impression on her personal experience was Men. Humans are essentially selfish, self-absorbed and vicious. Valerie knew that first hand. Had she been tested I have no doubt she would have registered a genius IQ. As it is many see her as having died as a worthless indigent junkie Dyke.While nothing could be further from the real truth.

Valerie was rich in the human experience. She was keen to the tricks of the trade in human politics and social conscience. And she shot Andy Warhol because he deserved it and so as to make them both famous in that immortal meeting between the minds of two spirits that saw this world as something more and far less than the plastic bloated facade that lives to this day thinking itself an example of civil~ization.
Rest in Peace Valerie. And thank you for the wisdom, page after page. (Yes dear reader you have to look deeper to see past the scum.)

review before you publish??

This is a good book that is well laid out, BUT there are more editing mistakes, inconsistencies and misprints throughout that make it difficult to teach and learn from. Perhaps another edition would be worth my time and money. Good luck with that.

As enjoyable today as in the 12th century

The Hanning and Ferrante edition of Marie de France's lais is satisfying on two levels. First, the translation and commentary are unsurpassed. Second, the twelve short tales are gems themselves.

Translation of poetry from one modern language to another is difficult, let alone from Anglo-Norman French to modern English. This edition manages it beautifully. Abandoning the original's octosyllabic couplets for free verse, the brevity and simplicity of the verse are preserved.

An introduction sets the lais in place and time. Essentially nothing is known of Marie de France personally, so the introduction centers on the history, culture, and language of the 12th century. Modest footnotes supplement the text, but the strongest editorial contributions are the commentaries that follow each lai. While not completely necessary to an understanding of the stories, which can stand on their own, the commentary definitely enriches one's experience of these old Celtic/Breton tales.

Marie herself offers commentary on the tales as a whole in a Prologue, and frequently with a short statement at the beginning of an individual lai. This multiple framing of story within author commentary within modern commentary gives the reader great richness and depth. Marie's short but dense prologue offers philosophy and theory of writing that is still being reinterpreted.

The lais themselves are self contained and unconnected in plot, but typically involve a chilvaric episode or a courtly love situation, and a complication. The narrative moves quickly. These are not dull and laborious love stories, but adventures. In fact much is made in the critical world of the word "aventure" which translates as chance and luck as well as adventure.

Marie de France is known for using a marvel as a plot device. A marvel is a strange, exotic, sometimes magical, element upon which the story hinges. Milun and his lover, for example, exchange love letters for twenty years - love letters carried secretly between them by a swan.

Marie de France was likely a slyly disruptive force in the masculine court that she seems to be writing for. Bold and brave women are the rule. A reversal of masculine and feminine roles is not unusual. In Lanval a randy lady faerie queen, a pucelle, and her female knights completely overpower King Arthur and his court in a bloodless but completely effective rescue mission of a wrongly accused knight. The accuser is Arthur's queen, Guenivere is not named specifically, who definitely shows us her dark side.

I recommend this book to almost all readers, and certainly to anyone interested in the middle ages, courtly love, Arthurian legends, or women's literature.

The French Renaissance of the 12th Century.

Before the famous Italian Renaissance, you could speak of a French Renaissance in the 12th century as far as literature is concerned.
In Southern France there were the Troubadours, singers and poets, often part of the nobility or their entourage. In the North of France you had Chretien de Troyes and his Arthurian romances and the Lais of Marie de France, to name only two of the most important.
The 'Roman de la Rose' was written in the 13th cent. but is probably the most important masterwork of the French Renaissance.

About the person of Marie de France almost nothing is known for certain.Her 'Lais' - stories about romance or adventure - are based upon the popular and folkloristic tales that already existed for centuries in Bretagne - a region close to where the Atlantic meets the North-Sea.
These stories were handed down from generation to generation by story tellers.
The Lais of Marie de France excel by diversity. There are love stories - of course - but also vivid descriptions of
tournaments and even a story about a werewolf.
Marie de France proofs that medieval literature can be entertaining.

Courtly Love Critique

Like The Romance of Tristan and Iseult, The Lais of Marie De France offer the reader more than the literal. There is high emphasis placed on the symbolism of animals. There are dead nightingales, weasels that know the secret to new life, a jilted werewolf, and others. The lais and Tristan and Iseult were written during the same time period, as evidenced by the lai entitled "Chevrefoil," which retells one of the closing scenes in The Romance of Tristan and Iseult.
Most of the lais follow the courtly love tradition, but often with a twist of the opposite, especially in "Eliduc." Courtly love challenges the institution of marriage and other social conventions. It examines the problems that arise when people fall in love: selfishness, disloyalty, and violence.
I do fear that there is a lot lost in the English translation. The lais were originally long French poems, but the translation is presented as prose. However, where the music of the language lacks, the consequences of the work remain.

The Real Story

Diez explains that the missile crisis came not out of the Cold War, but out of the U.S. imperialism's drive to dominate Cuba and other poor countries. For the first time, we have the story not just from the Cuban side, but using the internal documents of the US and Soviet governments, and the experience of the Cubans. This is the full truth about October 1962. The author reveals that the Cuban's main agreement to bring missiles and Soviet troops to Cuba came in the face of an open military and political campaign by Washington to invade Cuba and how Cuban resistance to this invasion threat, both by its military preparedness, the politica determination of its people, and its support around the world was what really stopped the threat of war and invasion. Acosta also explains how from the first, the Fidel and the other Cuban leaders did not want the Soviets to keep the arms and missiles secret and that they believed there would not have been any crisis if they had publically asserted Cuba's right to defend herself. This book is has more than 80 pages of Cuban documents from the crisis including transcripts of the October 30 and 31, 1962, meetings between Fidel Castro and UN Secretary General U Thant. It as 16 pages of end notes, many footnotes, an 8-page glossary, a 6-page bibliography, and 28 pages of photographs, as well as the only existing map that shows the location of Soviet missiles and other military units in Cuba during the crisis.

The issue was revolution not missiles

As the US government prepares for it's invasion of Iraq and the discussions and debates opposing the imperialist aggression increase, this new offering from Pathfinder stands out like a beacon.
The book details events surrounding what is widely known as the Cuba Missile Crisis, when the US administration led by President John. F. Kennedy pushed the world to the edge of nuclear war in an effort to overthrow Cuba's revolutionary government.
A year before the events in question, Cuban armed forces defeated an invasion by a counterrevolutionary force trained and armed to the teeth by Washington at the Bay of Pigs. Realising that direct US military invasion of Cuba was their only viable option, Washington began to lay the groundwork for such an action. In turn, Cuba began preparations to defend the first free territory of Americas, which included accepting a Soviet proposal to deploy missiles on the island.
After a period of negotiations between Washington and Moscow, Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev agreed to withdraw the missiles without consulting the Cuban leadership. A week after the announcement Washington sent UN secretary general U Thant to Cuba demanding that UN "inspectors" be allowed to "supervise" the withdrawal of the missiles.
"Anyone who tries to inspect Cuba had better arrive in full combat gear!" was Fidel Castro the Cuban Prime Minister's reply.
As Cuban author Tom�s Diez Acosta so amply illustrates throughout the book, there was no bluff in Castro's words. It was based in the confidence the Cuban leadership had in the hundreds of thousands Cuban workers and farmers in and out of uniform mobilised and trained - ready to defend their country.
As the book explains, this is the central reason why Washington was forced to back off from its invasion plans.

How to stop weapons of mass destruction: a true story

Killingly funny and deadly serious at the same time. Reading this through the prism of the G7's latest drive to prepare the bombing of Baghdad is electrifying. These pages lay out so simply, so factually, that war was averted because the Cuban people faced down the world's most powerful government. As quotes from US government documents explain, fearing that, if left to its own devices, the Cuban revolution would become too popular to defeat, Washington manufactured hysterical propaganda out of whole cloth about the nuclear threat (sound familiar?) from Cuba. The Cubans, sandwiched between the Soviets' manoeuvrings and the US government's plans, behaved with such aplomb. The transcript of Castro's meeting with the UN secretary-general is priceless -- Castro is so flawlessly polite and so totally unbending in his determination that no UN personnel will inspect anything on Cuban soil and that he will address the Cuban people without delay to explain everything, that the poor diplomat is reduced to quivering about how his wife wants him to take more Sundays off. Read this to see what real politics is all about -- all the "negotiators" had to keep coming back to the one immutable, undeniable, glorious fact that the Cuban people were ready, willing and able to give invaders such a good fight, they didn't dare make the trip.
